IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS TO CARPENTERS SQUARES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,887, dated March 26, 1872,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN DALGLIESH, of Oliarlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Attachment for Carpenters Steel Framing- Squares; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.
The nature of my invention consists of two small and movable pieces of wood or metal, made with an opening in the center to fit the short blade of the square; a flange with a square shoulder on one end to support the blade and keep it square with the long blade; and on the other end a thumbscrew to fasten it in place when being used.
With my invention a carpenter can use his steel square with ease and accuracy in marking the square of wide surfacesa matter now of considerable dfficulty-as, by lowering the short blade on one end to catch the side of the thing to be squared, the wide blade is tipped up where the mark is to be made. Accuracy is therefore doubtful, and case out of the question. When my attachment is added the square lies flat, and, by leaning the body against it it is held in its place, and both hands may be usedin marking accurately. This attachment, in fact, makes a framing-square into a try-square as far as marking is concerned, only so much longer than any made, I suppose, or that could or would be bought by most mechanics.
In the accompaning drawing, A, Figure 1, represents an edge View of my attachment, provided with the shoulders or a, and the tongue 0, and having a slot, b, through which the shorter end or blade of the square passes, and a clamp or set-screw for securing it in its place. B, Fig. 2, represents a common metallic square, with a pair of my removable blocks A A attached thereto, as above described.
