To all; whom it may concern .Be it known that I, JAMES Manon Brown,`
a citizen of the United States, residing at Roseburg, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Square, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to squares, and aims to provide a device of the character indicated which will serve either as an ordinary square, a try-square, or as a bevel ory miter square, and which when not in use may be compactly folded together to b e conveniently stored away or carried about in a vest pocket or the like.
This invention also contemplates the production of a square of the class specified, which shall be simple, substantial, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, accurate and etlicient in use, and which may be employed by draftsmen, carpenters, mechanics or other artisans.
l/Vith the foregoing general objects outlined, the present invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and particularly claimed, it beingunderstood that this device susceptible of alterations or deviations in its details within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying` drawings, wherein similar reference'characters have been employed to denote corresponding parts, and wherein-- l Figure 1 is a plan view of the square in open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the square when folded, parts being broken away. Figs. 3, 11 and 5 are sectional details taken on the lines 3--3, and 5 5 of F ig. 2, respectively. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a number of details in separated position.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the present square embodies a stock or beam denoted generally by the numeral 7 and a tongue or blade 8 pivoted to the stock. The stock comprises a pair of rectangular cheek plates 9 and the respective shim strips 10 and 1l riveted between the outer edges and outer ends of the cheek plates, the adjoining ends of the shim strips 1G and 11 being spaced apart to provide an opening 12 at the outer end of the stock through which an implement may be introduced to swing the blade S open should the same stick. The tongue 8 1s of such dimensions as to fit snugly within the cheeky plates 9 when the parts are folded. The cheek plates, tong-ue,
and shim strips may be constructed of lessenier steel, or in fact, of any other material, which also applies to the remaining parts ofthe square hereinafter referred to. The various par-ts may also be polished or otherwise ornamented or protected.

This pivot pin 13 permits the tongue S to be folded within the stock and when the tongue is swung outwardly or into Yopen position, the outer edge thereof is designed to lie tlush with the inner end of the stock when the tongue and Y stock are at right angles to each other. three-quarters and the like. 'A fiat pointer 1G rests upon the 'cheek plate 9 lhaving the protractor scale, and is provided with an aperture at its butt end receivingone @11d of the pivot pin 13, the other end or tip of the pointer cooperating with the protractor scale'15.
In order to secure the pointer 16 relative to the tongue S and in order to retain the tongue at any desired position,'a square or non-circular bolt 17 is passed through the tongue and passes through the arcuate slots 14, the head 18 of the bolt bearing against the cheek plate opposite the one having the protractor graduations and the bolt having a screw-threaded reduced extension 19. The bolt 17 passes through a square or non-circular opening 2O in the tongue 8, and the screw-threaded extension 19 passes through an aperture 21 in the pointer 16 adjacent its tree or pointed end, a projecting tail nut 22 being engaged on the threaded end of the bolt and bearing against the pointer 16. It will thus follow, that the bolt 17 prevents leo the pointer lo againstmovement relative to the tongue, so that the pointer stands transversely of the tongue and is swung with the tongue, and it will be further observed, that by tightening the tail nut 22, the cheek plates will be clamped against the tongue S so as to clamp the tongue at any position to which it is set. Means have also been provided for locking the tongue relative to the stock at certain positions, preferably when the tongue is at right angles to the stock and when the tongue is folded within the stock, these means consisting in a leaf spring 23 arranged along the inner edge ot a cheek plate 9 having the protractor scale, one end ot the said spring being secured to the said cheek plate adjoining the pivot pin 13 by means of a rivet 24. The tree end of the spring Q3 has a catch or latch pin 25 secured thereto which works through apertures 2G provided in the cheek plates 9, the said catch being engagea-ble through apertures 27 in the tongue 8, so Jthat the catch 25 may snap through the respective apertures 27 when the blade is swung at right angles to the stock and when the blade is iolded within the stock. ri`he edges oit the tongue 8 are preferably jnovided with suitable scales or gradnations.
The use ot squares of this character is so common in the art, that an extensive description thereof is not thought necessary, the same being apparent to the various artisans. T his square, however, possesses a number et advantages as will be apparent, and carries out the objects aimed at in a satisfactory7 and convenient manner, the present square aeing a desirable one for the purposes t'or which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A square embodying a stock comprising two elongated cheek plates and shim strips secured between one of the edges and one ot the ends of the cheek plates; an elongated tongue designed te be completely housed between the cheek plates; a pivot pin passing through the cheek plates and tongue at one corner; the cheek plates having arcuate slots therein with the pivot pin as a center; a noncircular bolt fitting through the tongue and slots with its head hearing against o-ne cheek plate, the bolt having a reduced threaded end; a pointer connected at one end to the pivot pin and at the other end to the reduced threaded end ot the bolt; the other cheek plate having a protractor scale coperating with the pointer; and a tail nut engaging the threaded end of the bolt to lock the pointer in an adjusted position on the protractor scale.
