Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J" an. 11, 1916.
Application filed September 23, 1914. Serial No. 863,146.
To all 'LU/wm 'it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM P. CALLA- i-mN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter- Boxes7 of which the following is a specification.
rlChis invention relates to miter boxes and has special reference to a miter box carrying saw guides which are adjustable to swing both in horizontal and vertical planes.
The principal object of this invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide improved means for permitting adjustment of a saw horizontally about a pivot so that varying angles may be cut.
A third object of the invention is to provide improved means for adjusting the device about a horizontal axis so that the saw, when held in the guides, may be guided in different planes at an angle to the vertical.
A fourth object of the invention is to provide improved guides for use in connection with a miter box of this description.
A fifth object of the invention is to provide an improved back for such a box.
1With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in General of certain details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views and Figure 1 is a plan view of a miter box constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a portion of the adjusting means for the horizontal adjustment. Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, the section being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is a detail top view of one of the guides. Fig. 7 is a detail side' view of one of the back members. Fig. 8 is a similar view of another back member.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a skeleton metal base 10 having along its back edge spaced eyes 11 wherein :lit the lugs 12 of back members 13 which have their inner ends beveled as at 14 and provided with sockets 15 for the rey exterior but has an interior circular ception of lugs 16 formed on complementary back members 17 which when used in connection with the members 13 form spaced upstanding rectangular portions. The p0rtions 12 and 16 are held in the respective eyes or sockets by means of set screws 18. Between these back members the base is provided with a pivot openino` 19 wherein is located a pivot 20 to the lower end of which is secured a tube 21 which is square on the opening therethrough. Secured on the free end of this tube is a collar 22 and on the exterior of this collar is screwed a sleeve 23 having at its opposite end an inwardly projecting flange 24 wherein is screwed a sleeve 25 similar to the sleeve 21 and alined therewith. Extending through these sleeves is a bar 26 which is provided within the sleeve 23 with a collar 27 having notches 28 formed therein. The sleeve 23 is provided adjacent the flange with a lug 29 adapted to enter one of the notches 23 when the bar 26 is moved outward by a spring 30 arranged as shown in Fig. 2. Each end of the bar 26 is squared as at 31 and on these squared portions are mounted guides 32 which includes a pair of spaced C-shaped members 33 of 'mc-tal, these members being provided with wood linings 34 arranged to fit within and overlap said members as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
Spaced above the sleeves 21 and 25 is a. dove-tailed member 35 and in the dove-tail of the member is seated a wooden strip 36 forming the track for the saw and thus preventing injury to the saw teeth. It will be obvious that both the strips 34 and the strips 36 may be replaced when worn.
Secured to the base end is a quadrant 37 provided with a graduated cover 38 and this quadrant is formed of a pair of spaced menibers having their adjacent sides inclined downward toward each other and provided on their adjacent bottom edges with notches 381 to receive lugs 39 formed on the head 40 of the clamp members embracing the tube 25 and provided with downwardly extending lugs 41 arranged for engagement by a lever 42 the latter being normally depressed by means of a spring 43.
In using the device when it is desired to adjust the saw guides for a horizontal angle the lever 42 is raised so that the lugs 39 are disengaged. The front guide then may be swung about the pivot 20 until the desired angle is obtained. By releasing the lever 42 the device is locked in this position. lf it is wished to cut an angle varying from the vertical the guides 32 areJ forced in against the action of the spring 30 so that the collar 27 is released 'from the lug` 29. The guides may then be swung in a vertical plane, the sections 17 of the back being removable to permit this. /Vhen the desired vertical angle has been obtained releasing the guides permits the spring to force the collar 27 into engagement with the lug 29 thus locking the parts in adjusted position.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the character speciiied.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to conine the invention to the exact :form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
ln a mitering device, a base, a bar pivoted to said base, upstanding guides carried by said bar, parallel arcuate members fixed to said base and having their proximal sides inclined downwardly toward each other, the lower edges of said sides being provided with spaced notches, a locking member provided with a tapered head strad dling a plurality of said notches and movable between said arcuate members, said head having downwardly extending legs straddling said bar, lugs on said head for selective engagement with said notches, a lever pivoted to said bar and engaging beneath said legs, and a spring normally holding said lever downward.
In testimony whereof aiiix my signature in presence of two witneses.
