Be it known that I, J oHN J. KOETZNER, residing at Washington, in the District of Oolumbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Covers or Tops forShop-Oounters, Saloon-Bars, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The counters of shops and stores and the bars of restaurants and saloons require to be resurfaced at intervals, and considerable time is necessary for the varnish or other final coat to dry sufficiently to permit renewed use of the counter or bar, which involves a serious inconvenience and loss to the proprietor.

It is the object of my invention to provide a temporary cover or top for count-ers and bars which shall efliciently protect them While the varnish or other coat is drying. The said cover or top is supported above and parallel to the fixed counter or bar and is adapted for use in the same manner as the latter, so that no interruption of business occurs. The temporary cover or false top is adjust-able vertically and may also be adapted in width to the fixed counter or bar and is likewise firmly attached to the latter, but in such manner as to permit it to be easily setup and removed. rlhe details of construction and attachment are as hereinafter described, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawings,in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fixed counter or bar provided with my improved cover or top. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. 3V is a detail perspective, hereinafter referred to. Fig. 4 is a transverse Vertical section illustrating` the use of an adjustable standard or support. Fig". is aperspective view including means for supporting the temporary cover or top. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another portion ofthe support. Figs. 7, 8, and 9 show, respectively, different forms of crossbars employed for supporting the temporary cover or top. Fig. 10 is a vertical section of the socket for the supplemental leg or standard.

Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 4, A indicates a fixed counter or bar, and B my improved temporary cover or false top for the same. The said cover or top proper is composed of the following parts: A series of crossbars 1 are supported horizontally above and parallel to the lixed counter or bar A by means prevent the accidental percolation of liquids,

andfor this purpose I propose to employ any other material that may be suitable. As shown in Fig. 1, a second sheet 3a is detachably secured to the pendent edge of sheet 3 by means of hooks 5 (see Fig. 3) and serves to protect the front ot' the counter or bar A, if occasion requires-that is to say, in case the said front should be resurfaced at the same time with the horizontal top.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 7, the cross-bars 1 may be constructed with a broad body having reduced ends adapted to enter sockets in the supports 6, which consist of bars supported vertically ou each side ot' the counter or bar A. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4, these supports are held and adapted for vertical adjustment in sockets formed on the heads of horizontal bars 7, which are held in keepers and guides 8, (see also Fig. 6,) that are secured to the under side of the top of the said counter or bar A. The said keepers and guides 8 are troughshaped and secured to the ledges of the counter or bar by means of screws and also provided With clamp-screws 9 for holding the horizontal bars 7 securely in any adjustment. 'lhe vertical bars or supports 6 are similarly clamped by screws 10 in the sockets of the horizontal bars 7. It is apparent that by this construction and combination of parts the temporary cover or false top B may be .adjusted vertically as required. In practice a space of one inch between the cross-bars 1 and the top of the fixed counteror barA will sufce for due circulation of air for drying the varnish on the latter. It is further apparent that the bars 7 may be slid in the keepers and guides S as required to accommodate any desired Width of the temporary cover or top B. The cross-bars 1 and also the cross-bars 1a, (shown in Fig. 8,) having a uniform width, will require to be made IOO of different lengt-hs to accommodate different widths of counters or bars A. I illustrate in Fig. 9, however, a cross-bar 1b, which is composed of two slotted parts adapted to slide on each other and clamped together by means of screws and nuts 11, the screws being arranged horizontally.

In some cases the keeper and guide 8, before described, cannot be employed, or it can be applied only at or near the ends of a counter or bar, so that some other form ot' support is .necessary at the middle of the counter, and in such case I support the horizontal bars '7 by means of a vertical standard 12, which is illustrated in Fig. 4. The said standard is provided at each end with a socket 13, which is provided with lateral base-fianges having perforations for the reception of screws for securing it to the door. The shank of the horizontal bar '7 passes through such socket 13 and is clamped by a screw 13L in the same manner as in the guides and keepers S, as before described.

It will be understood that the socket 13 is not screwed in place when applied to the upper end of the standard 12; but by providingr it with screw-holes I avoid the necessity of casting separate sockets for the foot of the standard 12. The latter is reduced and shouldered to adapt it to enter the vertical opening in the socket 13, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 10. The screws 12 and 13 pass through vertical parallel ears or lugs, as shown. l

The standard or leg l2 is adapted for vertical adjustment as required for counters or bars of different heights. Such adjustment may be effected in various ways; but in this instance I show the standard made in two parts, which are adapted to slide upon each other and are clamped together by means of screws and nuts 14.

Thus constructed the cover or false top B is adapted to perform an important service involving but little expense. It may be kept in stock in various widths orsizes, as requiredJ to accommmlate different counters and bars and may be hired by proprietors of the latter for the required temporary use.

What I claim is- 1. A temporary cover or false top for the purpose specified, the same comprising the horizontal portion or top proper, and a series of supports therefor adapted to be arranged on the sides of' the fixed counter or bar and for vertical adjustment substantially as shown and described.

2. A temporary cover or false top for the purpose specified, the same comprising the horizontal portion or top proper and supports therefor which are arranged at the sides and adapted for horizontal adjustment from and toward said sides as required to accommodate fixed counters or bars of difi'erent widths su bstantially as described.

3. The combination with a fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover or top therefor, ex-

tended over the fixed bar and a series of su pports for said cover or top which are arranged on the sides of such fixed counter or bar and adapted to be connected therewith substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination with a fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover or-top therefor which comprises a horizontal portion extending over the fixed counter and a series of supports arranged at the sides thereof and parts adapted for attachment to the fixed counter or bar and for holding said supports as shown and def scribed.

5. The combination with a fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover or false top which extends over the same, and a series of supports for said cover or top, which are carried by the counter or bar substantially as shown and described.

6. The combination with the fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover comprising a horizontal portion, side supports therefor, horizontal bars in which said supports are held and keepers and guides in which said horizontal bars are adapted to be adjusted and held substantially as shown and described.

7. The combination with the fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover or false top therefor cross-bars forming a support for the top proper, vertical bars arranged on the sides and connected with said cross-bars, horizontal bars in which the vertical supports are held andkeepers and guides adapted to be secured to the fixed counter or bar and in which said horizontal bars are held and adapted for adjustment as shown and described.

S. The improved temporary cover or false top for the purpose specified, the same comprising the top properone or more boards arranged longitudinally thereunder, a sheet of material which is impervious to liquids, the same being laid between the top proper and said boards and means for supporting such temporary cover substantially as shown and described.

f). The combination with a fixed counter or bar of a temporary cover comprising a horizontal portion, cross-bars for supporting the same which are adjustable in length, and supports carried by said fixed counter or bar and also adapted for horizontal adjustment substantially as shown and described.

10. The combination with a fixed counter, and a temporary cover arranged thereover, of a vertical standard or bar, and a socket which is adapted to receive the end of such standard, and also a horizont-al bar projecting inward from said socket beneath the edge of the counter, thus constituting part of the supports proper of the said cover, and means for connecting the horizontal bar with said counter as shown and described.
