SAMUEL e. C-ABELL, O'F o-U-INcY, ILLIN 01s.
. Letters Patent No. 65,873, dated June 18, 1867. V
IMPROVEMENT IN corYmc-rn'rs'srs.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. CABE LL, of Quincy, in Adams county, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvment in Copying-Prcsses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, through letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of'this specification, and in whieh--- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my press.
Figure 2, a. front elevaltion and Figure 3, a central longitudinal section. i
The same letters occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts p The nature of my invention consists in so constructing the cam-lever as to provide for elevating as well as depressing the platen, by a single device, and in so connecting the cam with the platen and bridge asto dispense with all the usual guides, whereby the press is reduced to the utmost degree of simplicity, consisting of only three castings and a small roller, which are put together by drillingbut two holes for the insertion of steel wire pins, which completestthe construction of the press. I
To enable others skilled in manufacture to mike and use'my invention,'I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by referring to the drawings, in which- A ,represents. the bed-plate, which is cast with an upright, B, at each end,-of suitable height, and from the upper end of each is an arch or bridge, 0, connecting the two; this much is all cast in one piece. Thebridge C has a slot, D, vertically through it, extending nearly from end to end, which is formedby a. core in the casting. Within this slot, near the centre of, its length, is support-ed the eccentric E, on a pin, F, passed laterally through it and the bridge 0, and on which it vibrates. The platen G is cast withtwo ears H, at the centre of itsupper side, of suificient distance apart to admit the eccentric E between them, the space between them being longi tudinal-ly parallel with the slot D, in the bridge, and vertically under it. These ears H are about half the diameter of the eccentric E in length, and are consequently suflicient guide to keep the platen vertically over the bed-plate, without the necessity of end guides, as commonly constructed. The eccentric E is constructed with a semi-annular slot, I, in which is inserted a roller, a, of udiameter about equal to the width of the slot I, and yet to be capable of rolling in it. The eccentric is then connected with the platen by inserting a, pin, 0, transversely through the ears H and rollers-a. Thus it will be seen that by turning the eccentric to the left by moving the lover K in' direction of the arrow, fig. 3, the platen will be raised by the roller revolving on the low side of the slot I and in'moving it in the opposite direction, the platen will be depressed by the upper side of said slot bearing'on and rotating the 'roller, until sufficient pressure is produced; and in order to retain the lever in any desired position-I insert a set-screw, u, in one side of the bridge, to pinch the cam or eccentric, and thus prevent its motion.
What I claim asinew, vand desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 The slotted eccentric E, and roller a, combined and arranged with relutionto the platemG and bridge H- all constructed and operating substantially as herein set forth.
' .S. G. CABELL.
