SILAS S. PUTNAM, OF DORCIIESTER, MASSACHUSETTS,
Leiters Patent No. 69,587, dated October 8, 1867.
IllllPItOvlDV CLOTHES-HOOK.
dlp tlgn'hule einer tu in tipa Entes @that ma marking putt nt the sinne,
TO ALL WIIOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SILAS IS. PUTNAM, of Dorchester, in the county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved I'Iook for Suspending Clothes and other articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hook in a position ready for use.
Figure 2 is a central 4vertical section through the same.
Figure 3 is a front elevation, showing the hook swung to one side.
Figure lis a perspective view ofthe inner side of the bracket which supports the hook.
Figure 5 is an elevation of they hook detached.
I Figure 6 represents a single hook, to be referred to hereafter.k
My invention relates to certain improvements in hooks for suspending clothes and other articles, and consists in a peculiarv construction and combination of parts whereby it may be readily swung to one side, causing it to occupy less space, when not required for use, and particularly adapting it for many situations where an ordinary hook would be unsuitable, in consequence of its projecting out too far.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings A is a metal bracket, of the form shown, which is attached to the wooden strip B by means of screws al. In this` bracket A is formed a slot or opening, c, through which passes the horizontal portion of the double hook C, which is furnished, at its inner end, with a vertical bearing, d, (fig. 5,) which fits 'into a recess, e, formed in the inner side of, the bracket, as seen in figs. 2 and 4, the length of the recess c being somewhat greater than that of the bearing d, so as to aillow the latter to have a slight vertical motion, for a. purpose to be described hereafter. The hook C is thus held firmly in pl'ace within the bracket A, and may be turned on its bearing cl into either of the positions seen in iig. 1 or 3. A thin metal pla-te may be placed behind the bracket A, if desired, so as to prevent the bearing d of the hook from wearing into the strip B. When the hook C is swung out into a position for use, as seen in iig. 1, the portion 7 drops down into the notch 8, gs. 3 and4., which thus serves to lock it iirmly in place and prevent it from being accidentally moved to one side. When, however, the portion 7 is raised out of the notch 8 the hook may be swung out of the way, as required, into theposition seen in iig. 3, thus causing it to occupy less space. '.lhe length of the recess e, as before stated, is sufticient to allow a slight vertical motion of the bearing d, when the portion 7 of the hook drops into or is raised out ot the notch 8. The slot or opening c is cut entirely through the bracket at one side, so as to allow the double hook 'to'be inserted in place; but when a single hook, D, a's seen in iig. 6, is to be used it will not be necessary to cnt through the side ofthe slot, as the hook can be inserted in place by passing its point through the slot from the back or inner side of the bracket.
The above-described hook is simple and durable', and may be manufactured at a small cost, as the parts are all cast smooth and do not require any nishing, fitting. or riveting together, and consequently may be easily detached for packing or put together for use.
A hook constructed as above described may be readily swung to one side, so as to occupy very little space, thereby particularly adapting it for use in many situations where'an ordinary hook would be unsuitable in consequence of its projecting out too-great a distance. This invention is more particularly adapted for clotheshooks, but may be applied to those used for other purposes.
` C'Zaim,
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The bracket .A, with its recess e, and slot or opening c, in combination with the hook C or D, constructed and operating substantially as described.
SILAS S. PUTNAM.
