Description

HENRY W. KETCHAM, OF 'NEW YORK,y N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 86,760, dated FebTua/ry 9, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN SAIL-BENDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patentv and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it mol/y concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. KETGHAM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a newand improved Sail-Bender; and I do hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact' description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part oi' this specification.
Figure l represents my improved sail-bender, attached to a mast-hoop. l
Figure 2 is a detail sectional View of the same, taken through the line x x, g. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved sail-bender, or detachable metallic seizing, by means of which the sail may be securely attached to the hoop in such a Way'that it may be securely held, and easily and quickly detached when required; and
Itoonsists in the construction and combination of the various parte, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a mast-hoop;
B represents a bolt-rope and G, the sail, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. K
D and E are two eye-bolts, which are secured to one side of the hoop A, by nuts, placed upon the ends of said bolts, upon the inner side of the hoop A, as shown in iig. 1.
The bolts'D andE are placed at such a distance apart as to receive the bolt-rope B between them freely.
The eye-bolts D and E are of different lengths, and to the eye of the longer one, E, is pivoted or hinged p the hook F.
The hook F is'made in two parts, which are hinged or jointed to each other, and are made in such a shape as Vto conform to the form of the bolt-rope and part of the sail attached to said bolt-rope, as shown in fig. 1.
Gr is a Wedge or lock-plate, through an inclined slot B, and is hooked into the eye of the shorter eye-bolt D.
The wedge or lock-plate Gr is then turned and forced down between the bolt-rope B and the hoop A.
As the wedge G is lbrced down between the bolt-V rope B and hoop A, it is forced forward, bringing the shanks ofthe eye-bolts into the inher ends ofthe slots .in said wedge, securely locking it in place.
In detaching the sail..-thewedge G isffirst pushed back, and can then be raised from its place, releasing the bolt-rope B, and allowing'the hook F to be unhooked, detaching the sail.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Securing the bolt-rope ofthe sail to the hoop, by means of a detachable metallic device, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
' 2. The pivoted slotted lock-plate or wedge G, in combination with the eye-bolts D and E, for the plu'- pose of locking the bolt-rope in place, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. An improved sail-bender, formed by the combination of the eye-bolts D and E, jointed and pivoted hook F, and pivoted wedge or lock-plate G, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
The above specification of my invention signedby me, this 14th day of October 1868.
HENRY W. KETCHAM.
