Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,122, dated March 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD S. DAWSON, of Syracuse, in the county ot' Onondaga and Improved Snap-Hook; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ot' this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation ot the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section ot' the same, the line x x, Fig. 2,.indicat ing the plane of section. Fig. 4 shows the tongue detached.

This invention consists in providing the tongue ot' a snap-hoop with prongs at its inner end to catch over a bar, which is cast or otherwise fastened in the body of the hook in suoli a manner that by placing the prongs otA the tongue over the bar and closing them said tongue is rmly connected to the body of the hook with little labor. ln the inner surface of the tongue, at its outer end, is a dovetailed recess, together with ianges or points, to head down over the outer end of the spring, which serve to receive and hold-the spring iu such a manner that the work of securing the spring is reduced, and a hook can be produced which is at once cheap, durable, and easily operated, the outer end Ot' the spring to be formed in dovetail shape to fit said dove- A represents the body of my snap-hook, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, with the eye a, to receive the strap, and with the hook b, against the point of which closes the tongue B. This tongue is connected to the body of the hook by means of around bar,
c, which is cast or otherwise secured in said body, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the draw, ings, and which is so arranged that the end of the tongue can be placed over it, said end being provided with prongs d., as shown in Fig. 4, which can be made to straddle the bar c, and by bending the points of these prongs together under the bar the tongue is firmly connected to the body ot' the hook with little trouble or loss ot time.
C is the spring, which is fastened tothe tongue near its Outer point by two or more points or iianges formed on the inner surface of the tongue, to be headed down over the outer point ofthe spring, and a dovetailed recess, e, in said tongue, which is so shaped that the end of the spring can be slipped in and that said spring is held irrnlyin position by said points or anges in connection with the dovetailed recess without requiring any other means for fastening it. The labor required ofmakinga snap-hook is thereby considerably reduced, and a hook is produced which is cheap, durable, and strong. All its parts except the spring can be cast ot' malleable iron or ot' any other suitable material, and any desired finish can be given to the hook to suit customers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement of the bar c, recess and groove in the body ofthe snap, with the prongs d and spring on the tongue, affording the means for the attachment of the tongue to the body, and also for guiding and protecting the spring, substantially as described.
