Letters Patent No. 70,499, dated Novembdr, 1867.
IMPROVED SNAP-HOOK.
@tige tlgrhnlt netta tu im tigese @that @anni ,ma mating gratui tigt stun,
To ALL IVI-IOM IT MAY eoNonnN:
Bc it known that' I, C. H. ATWOD, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut,
have invented new and improved Snap-Hook; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and useA the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, formingipart of'this specification.
Thisini'nvention consists in combining a snap-hook with a plate in such amanner that the plate will serve as:v
a protection to the snap-hook, and prevent the latter being injured by abrasion or rubbing, as is now frequently the ease when the device'is applied to horse-bridles, forwhieh the invention ismore especially designed, as horses are very generally addicted to the habit of rubbing their heads 'against posts and other fixtures when attached or hitched thereto.
The invention also consists in the mode of manufacturing the invention, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a goed, substantial article is sure to be obtained. In the accompanying sheet of drawings'- Figure 1 is a detached inner view of the plate pertaining to my invention.
Figure 2, an inner view of the plate and snap-hook, all complete and ready for use.i
Figure 3, a section of iig. 2, taken in the line :c :v
Similar letters of reference indicate likc'parts.'
A represents a metallic plate, which may be of malleable cast iron, having a loop, '13, at one end, and a projection, C, at the opposite en d, as shown-clearly in iigfl. At the inner side of this plate A there are two lugs or earsa a. 'lhesc parts are all cast in one piece. D represents a snap, which is simply a straight bar, secured at one end between the lugs or ears a a by a pin, b, and having a spring, c, underneath it. The pre1 jection C is bent in curved form,as shown clearly in fig. 3, and is a hook, against the ond of -whielr tho free or disengaged end of the snap D is kept in contact by the spring c, and it will be seen that by pressing inward'4 .said end of the snap a loop or ring may be inserted in the hook, and, by releasing the snap, securely connected therewith. c l
The projection C is cast straight,- or in the same plane with the plate fortwo reasons, rst, convenience of' casting, and second, it insures the device being manufactured of superior metal, as inferiorlinctal would not admit of the projection C being bent in hook-forni; it would break in bending.
The plate A serves as a guard or projection to the hd'ok and snap, preventing them being injured by rubbing or abrasion, and it is ornamental withal, adding very materially to the appearance of the bridle.
What claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The snapdlook, constructed as described, consisting of the circular solid plate A, having loop B and llugs a east upon it, between the latter the straight bar D, pivoted and held intplaceagainst the vturn-up cn'd C by means of the spring c, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
2. The casting of the projection C with the plate A, in the same plane with the same, and th'enbending C in hook-form, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
