LEvi MATTHEWS, OEAAN'TRIEM. oHIo.
Letters .Patent No. 82,624, dated September 29, 1868.
Y IMPROVED CLOTHES-PIN.
@be Stgehtle retentit tu im time tetters atmt unt making nari nf its time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEVI MATTHEWS, of Antrim, in the county of Guernsey, and in the State of Ohio, have invented a. certain new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Pins; and do hereby declare that the following is a-full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to theletters of referencevmarked thereon. A 5
The nature of my invention consist-s in the construction of a self-adjustingvpin, and in its combination with a clothes-line, which is strained by some means to get the full eiect of the self-adjusting clothes-pin.
i In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe annexed drawings, which form a part of Ithis specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side vie-w of a box in section, with c'lothes-line and my self-adjusting pin attached, and
Figure 2 is a perspective of the pin, full size.
A represents a box, with a. lid, K, in the front, which box is to be secured iria suitable manner toa convenient place for using the clothes-line contained in the same. A shaft, B, passes through said box, having itsr bearings in the sides of the sume. To this shaft the clothes-line C is secured and wound up, a cog-wheel, D,- on
the shaft inside of the box, 'with a dog or pawl, E, preventing the line from giving anymore than desired.
At theend of the clothes-line, I place av ring, F, which is to be hooked or otherwise attachedv at a suitable point when the line is to be used.
On the line C are any number of clothes-pins I-I, that may be desired. The pins are-composed of a bar, at each end of which is placedn clothes-pin 'of the usual form and style, thus forming a double clothes-pin. Between the two pins on the under side of the bar, a ring, I, is secured, through which ring the clothes-line passes. Y
When the line `is to be used and the fnbric'placed on the line, the double pin H is placed onthe same, and the ring being shorter, that is, not as low down as the upper end of the slots in the pin, it will be seen that when the lino is strained, the doublepin H'adjusts itself on the same, and'holds the garment firmly to the line.
The straining of the line is easily accomplished by hiving a crunk attached to the shaft B, and' turning the same, as the pawl E, operating 'in the notches on the wheel D, prevents the shaft from turning back, or a i weight may be attached to the line, which also would accomplish thcsarne object.
Ido not claiui'n box for the purpose of preserving the clothes-line from rain', rite., as that has been used before but What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The double self-adjusting clothes-pin H, constructed as described, and provided with a ring, I, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hund, this 12th day of August, 1868.'
LEVI MATTHEWS.
