Description

T. 1.. HARTE. Boat Detaching.
Patented May 24 g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. HARTE, OF NEWF YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES BRANDON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHING-BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,455, dated May 24, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. HARTE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is improvement in apparatus for detaching the boats of ships, dto.; and it consists in the device constructed as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure l is an edge view showing the hook in an upright position, as when holding a weight.
Figure 2 is a side view, showing the hook in the same position.
Figure 3 is a view of the other side showing the detaching lever in an upright position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A H represent the block to which the pulley7 is attached, and which supports the detaching-hook and lever.
B is the hook, which is formed on the end of a shaft C.
D is the lever, which is securely attached to the shaft C.
E represents a slot in the block through which the shaft. C passes, and in which the lever operates.
The slot extends from the point f to the point g, seen in dotted line, Fig. 3, and the movement of the lever is limited by these bounds. NVith the lever attached in this manner, the shaft and detaching-hook B are allowed tol make about one half of a revolution.
it is but slightly turned from an upright position.
I represents the pulley around which the rope passes, by which the detaeher is suspended.
The end of the hook B (when the hook is upright) is nearly in contact with the lower portion of the part H of the block, as seen in the drawing, so that the ring which supports the Weight is well locked or secured in the hook.
J is a small safety-pin, which is inserted through the slot E, to hold the lever in position, as seen in Fig. l.
It will be seen that, with this simple apparatus, not only ship and steamer boats, but sacks of grain, bales of merchandise, and other heavy weights or articles may be detached with the greatest facility.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved detaching device herein described, consisting of the block A H, pulley I, hook B with its shaft O, and lever D, said parts being constructed and arranged as shown and set fort-h.
THOMAS J. HARTE.
