SAMUEL BROWN, OF NEW,YORK, N. Y., ASSGNOR TOy THE BROWN AND LEVEL LlFE-SAVING TACKLE COMPANY, OF SAME LACE.
Letters .Patent No.-61,312, dated January 22, 1867.
IMPBOYED BOAT-DETAGHING TAGKLE.V
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BROWN, oil the city, county,- and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Apparatus for Detaching Boats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichi Figure 1 represents a side view of a portion of thestern of a life or other boat, with the apparatus applied thereto, and as suspended to the davit-block at that end`it being understood that the same apparatus, or other that will accomplish the same purpose, is used at the bow of the boat.
Y This invention relates to a flexible detaching apparatus, as contradistinguished from those wherein hinged portions are used, and rigid rods or levers combined to trip or disconnect the parts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
Aring, a, is substantially secured to the end of the heat A, to which is linked by a short chain, b, an ordinary hook, c, with the single exception that it has an eye, e, wrought upon it on the outside of itsvbent portion, d. The shank of the hook c terminatesin an eye, f, to which achain or line, g, is attached, which passes through the ring' a, andthen extends to a small shaft, drum, Windlass, or lever in any convenient part oi' the boat, and to which shaft, drum, lever, or other device the chain or line from the forward detachiug apparatus may also be connected'. When the hook is placed into the eye of the davit-block, `(as shown in red lines,) and the ehairifor line g tightly drawn np, the apparatus will be in the position shown in the drawing, and hold the boat .suspended lto the davts. When the boat is to be detached, the chains -g are slacked or let run, and the hook reverses itself and lies out of the eye of the davit-block and is completely'detached from it, leaving the boat free. By this construction of lexible detaching apparatus no pivotedpins or swinging levers of any kind are used. The part'b, instead 4of being entirely of links, may be a rod with links at its ends, which may be said to'be a chain with long and short links. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A boat-connecting apparatus composed of the ring a, hook c, and chain b g, and which is disconnected from the block by slacking the chain g in the boat to be launched, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
SAML. BROWN.
