Definitions
- my clothes-rack consists of two frames made alike, and hinged together near their upper ends so that their lower ends will spread to form a base to keep the frames in standing position.
- A, B, and'C represent the three vertical bars of one frame, said bars having their upper ends bevelled on the inside, as seen at z. These bars are placed at suitable and equal distances apart, and are connected by two series of slats, d d. The slats pass from the outer to the centre of the inner bar, and are pivoted, being first placed parallel to each other.
- Each frame is constructed similarly, andthe two are hinged together at x. When the frames are closed at their lower ends their upper and bevelled ends separate; but when the lower ends are separated the bevelled parts meet and prevent the separation of the lower ends beyond a certain distance.

L. S. CALK IN`S,.OF E11-PASO, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 67,102, dated Julyl 23, 1867.
IMPROVED CLOTHES-DRYER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, L. S. CALKINS, of El Paso, in the county of Woodford, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new s-nd useful improvements in Clothes-Racks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.-
In thc annexed drawings, making part of this specification, it will be seen that my clothes-rack consists of two frames made alike, and hinged together near their upper ends so that their lower ends will spread to form a base to keep the frames in standing position.
A, B, and'C ,represent the three vertical bars of one frame, said bars having their upper ends bevelled on the inside, as seen at z. These bars are placed at suitable and equal distances apart, and are connected by two series of slats, d d. The slats pass from the outer to the centre of the inner bar, and are pivoted, being first placed parallel to each other. Each frame is constructed similarly, andthe two are hinged together at x. When the frames are closed at their lower ends their upper and bevelled ends separate; but when the lower ends are separated the bevelled parts meet and prevent the separation of the lower ends beyond a certain distance. A V-shaped block is secured upon the middle bars B and B', with its pointed end passing between the two inner ends of the lower slats. The object of this block is to prevent each frame from folding but one way,
`and to stop the frame when it is unfolded or wide open. In folding and shutting up this rack, the two frames are first brought together at their lower ends, and then the centre or middle bars B B being held together the bars A A and C C are raised until their slats meet or touch, as seen in the inverted view, Iig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'.lhe use ofthe two frames herein described, constructed and hinged together at their upper ends,`and provided with the blocks e @substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth In' testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I havehereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of May, 1 867. i
L. S. CALKINS.
