Letters Patent No. 7 4,854, dated February 11, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT .IN GLASPS FOR BELTS.

-TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be'it known that I, EDWARD I-IATGII, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massa-4 chusctts, have invented a new and useful Clasp for a Ladys Belt, or other article of like character; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part thereof. Of the said drawings? Figure 1 denotesia top view, and
Figure 2 an edge View of the clasp. l
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the smaller part of the clasp. v
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section, taken through the catches, their spring, and'casc..
The object of my invention is to produce a clasp, which, when applied to a. ladys belt, or other article, will enable-such belt or article to be readily either tightened or loosened, as may be desirable, and 'this without so disconnecting the two parts of the cla-sp es to render the holt or article to which it is applied liahle to fall'from the wearer while being adjusted.
My Ysaid clasp consists of two parts, A B, the same being made of thin plate metal, of any'sutable kind, such as is ordinarily'employed for the manufacture of articles of this character. The longer part, A, of the clasp, I make of a rectangular or any other desired shape, and form in the same two parallel slots, aa', running lon itudinall7 thereof. The inner side, c of each of such slots is streicht, and arallel with the Side of thc` g l a P part A, the outer side, cZ, of each of such slots being serrated or formed with a series of teeth, e e, 82e., the` same being shown in rig. 1. The smaller catch part of the clasp, or that marked B, I also construct of a rectangular shape, and on the upper surface thereof, and extending longitudinally of it, I make a cylindrical or other proper-shaped chambor,f, for the reception-of two spring-catches, gg', the same having the shape as shown in fig. 4. The said catches consist of two pieces of wire, bent at right angles to each other, the lower half or leg of each being provided with a head or button, h, to' actin conjunction with the aforesaid series of teeth e. The said'lewer portions of the catches project through aslot, z', formed through the lower face of the part B, in manner as shown in iig. 3. The said catches are forced apart hy coiled or helical spring, J, or its equivalent, bent as shown in said ligure. The other ends of the catches project from the ends of the said casef, and may he provided with heads or knobs, c 7c, by which cach of the said catches may be forced inward, and out of the notches or series of teeth with which they operato. Furthermore, from the under face of the said part B, four studs, lill, extend downward. These studs are so disposed that when the two parts of the clasp are together, two of the said studs shall be on each side ol' the middle bar, m, et' the part A, and thus serve to maintain the part B, when moved over-the portion A, in its proper path of movement. Eaehof the said parts A and B is to he formed sothat it may he readily attached to a belt or hand.
In operating with the said clasp, if we suppose the two parte thereof to be attached to a belt, and such belt to be clasped around a ladys waist, or other part of her person, if it is desirable to either tighten or loosen such belt, she has only to press, by means of her thumb and fore-linger, upon the knobs lc 7c, `and the catches will be forced out of their notches, and the part D may he easily slid in either direction, as circumstances may require. v
This invention has been found to he very useful for the purpose for which it is designed.
I claim my improved belt-clasp, composed et' the plate A, (formed with the slots a a', and theteeth or ser- `rations e e, & z.,) and. the plato or part'B, (provided with the chambery, tho spring-catches g y', and stud z'z',) the'said parts being arranged, conetrueted,`and applied together in manner as sot forth, and so as to operate as explained.
