SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,144, dated March 26, 1889.
' Application filed August 2l, 1888. Serial No. 283,391. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN V. THOMAS, of \Vestranch,in the county of Ogemaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cuff-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention belongs to cuff-holders, having for its obj ect to permit of the ready attachment and detachment of the holder and the effective fastening or securing of the same; and to these ends the nature of the invention consists of a contrivance or device adapted to pass through the eyes or loops of the cuffbuttons, and which has an offset or shoulder that springs past the eye or loop of one cuffbutton, while that portion of the contrivance upon the opposite side of the button eye or loop to that occupied by the offset or shoulder is provided with a spring, which ilexes or bowsoutward to take the shoulder or offset out of alignment with the button eye or loop, and in the detailed construction or organization of the device as an entirety, all substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a cuff with my invention applied thereto, which, however, is shown in side view. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective vev of the holder proper.
In the embodiment of my invention l form the holder proper, A, preferably of wire, doubling it upon itself into two lengths or portions, a c. The inner end of one portion or length a is provided with an open eye or socket, a', and then carried beyond said eye or socket a short distance, as at c2, at right angles to itself, said right-angled or transverse portion a terminating in a second open eye or socket, a3. The other portion or length a of the holder A is extended through and beyond the open eye or socket a of the opposite portion, a. It is next looped or coiled into a spring, as at at, it then being returned or extended, so asto form a pin of its remaining length, being furnished with a fine or pointed free end, which engages with or is received into the eye or socket a2 of said opposite portion, a. Thus far, however, nothing new has been disclosed.
The holder A is formed a short distance outward from its inner end with a shoulder or offset, E, which stands just forward of the eye of the inner button, while alittle distance back of or inward from said shoulder or offset it is provided with a spring, C. The spring C is produced is this instance by forming each length or portion a of the holder A with a lateral arm or loop deiected or inclined outward and downward, whereby, with its outer ends resting upon the cuff, the holder is held slightly away from the cuff at this point.
In applying my invention for use the forward or outer end of the holder is iirstpassed through the eye or loop of the inner button of the cuff, it being next passed through the eye or loop of the outer button, and as it is forced or shoved home the shoulder or offset B will also pass through the loop or eye of the inner button, immediately after which the action of the spring C will' throw the holder slightly away from the cuff, which will project and hold the shoulder or offset beyond the eye or loop of the inner button, and thus effectively secure the holder in place against accidental displacement.
In removing the holder it is only necessary to press the same toward the cuff with the thumb, a finger being applied oppositely to the outside of the cuff or inner button, when the shoulder or offset B will be permitted to assume simultaneously with the compression or flattening of the spring C a position that will allow it to pass through the eye or loop of the inner button. Now, by pullinginward upon the holder the same is readily withdrawn.
The holder A, as above described, has a pin or means to connect it with the shirt sleeve or with the lining' of the coat-sleeve, if desired.
This invention, it will therefore be seen, is capable of ready attachment and detachment, while it is automatically fastened in place. It is obvious that the contrivance can also be made or stamped from spring plate metal.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The cuff-holder herein described, adapted to fit in the eyes or loops of a cuff-button, and having an offset or shoulder that springs past IOO the eye or loop oli' one button, mid is provided upon the opposite sideof snid eye or loop with zt Spring that flexes o'r bows outward to hold said offset or shoulder out of alignment with the button eye or loop, substantially :is Set forth.
2. The eullholder herein described formed of :1y wire douhlingupon itself into two lengths or portions, eneh formed with an offset or shoulder and e Short distance from said offset or shoulder with lateral arms or loops defleeted or inclined outward and downward and jointly i'orlni ng; n` Spring, Substantially :is specified.
3. The euffholderconsisting of 2L wire douh ling; upon itself into two lengths or portions, each formed with an offset or Shoulder, and a short distance from Sayid .shoulder or offset with lnternl mns or loops deflected or inclined outward and downward zuid jointly forming n spring', one length or portion having its inner end formed with ain open. eye or loop and thence extended laterally and terminating in an end eye or loop, while the other portion. or length is extended through said 'end eye or loop oli' the opposite portion or length and beyond the saine, and provided with a spring'- pin engngingwith the other eye or loop of the opposite port-icm or length, substantially :is specified.
