DEVICE FOR HANDLING WiRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,328, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed September 28,1901. Serial No. 76,891. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID H. STEEL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Oronoque, in the county of Norton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvem ents in Devices for Handling Wire, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsin devices for handling wire, and has particular reference to a device for handling barbed wire, such as used in the construction of fences, the object being the production of a device of simple, inexpensive, and durable construction which will place the wire upon either side of the fence, as circumstances require, and
which will wind the wire upon the spool or reel or unwind it in the building of the fence, the functions being performed in a rapid and practical manner.
To attain the desired object, my invention consists of a device for handling barbed wire embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device with the parts in position for'performing the function of placing the wire on the side of the fence oppositethe machine. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the device in operating position for winding the Wire uponthe spool or unwinding the wire, as circumstances require.
My device is used in conjunction with a wagon and is attached to the body A at the front and rear ends, as will presently appear. At the forward end of the wagon-body in the brackets B is mounted the shaft 0, carrying the sleeves D, provided with arms E, carrying extensions E, which form the spool or reel for winding the barbed wire, and to the rear of the body in brackets E is secured the crosspiece F, upon which is secured the guidingsleeve G, the purpose of which is to guide the wire-in its winding and unwinding. Near one end of the spool-shaft is secured the wheel or disk H, with which is adapted to engage the brake-lever J, and to the end of said shaft is adapted to be applied the crank K. The inner end of said lever J is pivoted to the slotlever, which can be brought in contact with the rim of the wheel or disk, as will be understood.
' In the cross-piece F is secured the rod L, which carries an eye or wire-guide O, and the wire is adapted to pass from the roll through said guide and be'laid or deposited on the opposite side of the fence.
It will thus be seen that I provide a device which can be produced and attached to a wagon at a very small price and which will handle the wire rapidly and will entirely avoid the necessity of placing the hands upon the Wire at the risk of inflicting great bodily injury or of tearing the garments and that the device is practical, efficient, and desirable for the intended purposes.
I claim- The device for handling wire herein shown and described, consisting of the wagon-body, the shaft mounted on the front portion of the body and having a crank for turning it, a brake mechanism, consisting of a disk on said shaft, a lever to engage said disk, a slotted plate to which the lever is pivoted, and the attaching-plate, a wire-reel mounted on the shaft, a cross-piece secured upon the rear of the wagon-body, awire-guide carried by the cross-piece and in line with the reel, the rod secured in one end of the cross-piece and carrying a wire-guide for guiding the wire at one side of the body.
