REEL FOR WINDING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,809, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed July 16, 1889.

Be it known that I, DAVID GRovE, of Ellsworth, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Vindin g \Vire; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in-A vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
My invention relates to an improvement in reels for winding and paying wire, the object of the saine being to provide -a device of the above character which shall combine means whereby the speed atwhich the wire is paid out may be conveniently and effectually gov erned by the operator.
A further object is to provide a machine of the above character which shall be simple aud economical in construction and durable and efficient in use.
Afurther object is to provide means for regulating the distribution of'wire upon the reel.
lVith the above ends in View my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

A brake-bar M is pivoted to the side board, as shown, the free end of which engages the collar N on 'the shaft. The lever O is pivoted below the brakesbar, and is connected therewith by means of the rod P. To the cross-bars Qis pivoted the lever-bar R, one end of which plays on the cross-bar S, in which are secured the posts T to limit the play of the lever-bar R. The rear end of the lever-bar R is provided with upright rollers U, journaled therein, the upper ends of said rollers being journaled in the braces V, which are secured to the lever-bar-one on each side. The said braces are curved at their upper ends in the direction of each other. A horizontal roller W is journaledin the braces V near the face of the bar and in the rear of the rollers U, for the purpose of facilitating the handling of the wire. Horizontal rollers Y are journaled in the rear ends of the side boards I) in front of the rollers-U. The object of the lever-bar is to enable the operator to wind the wire uniformly upon the spool by shunting the lever from one side to theother.
By using rollers the barbs of the wire will not catch in its`passage to the spool. The rollers should be made of metal, or if wood is used it should be covered with metal.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a wire-reel, the combination, with a removable axle and a removable spool engaging said axle, of a sbunting leverV pivotally secured below the spool and carrying a horizontal roller and vertical rollers for guiding the wire, and horizontal rollers located independently in front of the vertical rollers, substantially as shown and described.
