REEL FOR WINDING AND UNWINDING WIRE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,219, dated January 6, 1891.

Application filed March 15, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID GROVE, of Ellsworth, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for finding and Unwinding ire; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in reels for winding and stretching wire, the object of the same being to provide improvements over Letters Patent of the United States granted to David Grove the 12th day of November, 1889, and numbered 414,809.

With the above ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a detached view of axle F and box E, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine.

The body of the machine is suitably supported on the axle A by means of the shafts O, secured to said axle. The metal arches D are'secured to said shafts and are provided with the boxes E to receive the axleF of spool G. On this axle is removably secured the spool G, which is provided with cross end bars H at each end. One end of the axle is provided with the crank J for operating the same, and is further provided with the ratchet K, with which the pawl L engages and holds the said axle from backward movement when the wire is being wound thereon. A brakebar M is pivoted to the arch, as shown, the free end of which engages the collar N on the shaft. The lever O is pivoted below the brake-bar, and is connected therewith by means of the rod P. Pivoted near its rear end to a cross-bar (not shown) is the leverbar R, the free end of which plays on the cross-bar S, in which are secured the posts T to limit the play thereof The rear end of the lever-barR is provided with upright rollers U journaled therein, the upper ends of said rollers being journaled in the braces V,

which are secured to the lever-bar, one on each side. A horizontal roller W is journaled in the braces V near the face of the bar and forward of the rollers U. The object of the lever-bar is to enable the operator to wind the wire uniformly upon the spool by shunting the lever from one side to the other. By using rollers the barbs of the wire will not catch in its passage to the spool.

To the shafts O is journaled the Windlass a, the same being provided with the ratchet- Wheelb and the crank o. The pawl d is adapt" ed to engage the ratchet b. The rope e is fastened to the Windlass a, and the opposite end is secured to the clamp f, which engages the wire g, the roll of which is on spool G. The end of the wire should be fastened to a fence-post, and the apparatus should then be drawn along the line of the fence, the wire being paid out under control of the brake M. The wire is then strained by the aid of the Windlass and secured to the fence-posts, after which the slack should be rewound on the spool before laying another line of wire. The shafts O are provided with the rigid anchors h, which should be embedded in the ground, thereby holding the machine in place during the process of winding and stretching the wire. The blocks lo are inserted between the shafts O and the axle A for the purpose of elevating said shafts.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a wire reel and stretcher, the combination, with an axle F and a spool engaging said axle, a shunting-lever pivoted below the spool, carrying a horizontal roller and vertical rollers for guiding the wire, and horizontal rollers located independently in front of the vertical rollers, of Windlass a, journaled in the frame, a rope secured to said Windlass, and a clamp secured to the rope, adapted to engage and stretch the wire, substantially as set forth.

2. In a wire stretcher and reel, the combination, with an axle F, journaled in the arches D, and a spool engaging said axle, a shunt ing-lever pivoted below the spool, carrying a horizontal roller and vertical rollers for guiding the wire, and horizontal rollers located independently in front. of the vertical rollers, of the Windlass a, jonrnaled in the frame, a rope secured to said Windlass a, a elam p secured to the rope, adapted to engage and stretch the Wire, and rigid anchors secured to the ends of the shafts, substantially as shown and described.
