No. 280,628. Patented July 3, 1883.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IJYMAN P. JOHNSON, OF SENECA CASTLE, NEW YORK.
REEL FOR WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,628, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed March 29. 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LYMAN P. JoHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seneca Castle, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for WVire, of whichthe following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in reels for carrying wire tobe employed in the construction ofwire fences, telegraph-lines, and other like purposes, in order to deliver the wire as required, as more fully hereinafter specified.
The invention has for its objects to provide a carriage upon which the reels. of wire may be readily mounted insuch manner as to pay off the wire as it is secured to the supports, in the manner as more fully hereinafter set forth. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved apparatus complete; Fig. 2, a detached perspective view of a modification of the reel; and Fig. 3, a view showing a sectional view of said modification of the reel, showing the same applied to the axle of the apparatus.
The letter Aindicates an axle or shaft, having mounted on its ends the wheels B O.
The letter D indicates a metallic frame, secured at its ends to the opposite ends of the axle in any suitable manner. The said frame is constructed in two parts, the said parts being hinged together at the point E, for the purpose more fully hereinafter specified.
To the hub of the wheel B is secured a wheel, F, having a flange, G, provided with cog-teeth H on the inside, which intermesh with a pinion, I, mounted on an arm, K, secured to the shaft or axle. The said pinion intermeshes with a similar pinion on the end of afrustumshaped sleeve, L, mounted loosely on the shaft or axle and setting against a shoulder formed on said axle. The letter M indicates a similarly-mounted sleeve near the opposite end of the shaft, which, however, is formed without the cogged pinion. The said sleeves are provided with longitudinal ribs or feathers .N, which are adapted to engage the longitudinal grooves l? in the hub or hubs of the reel R.
In the modification shown in Figs. 2 and 3 V the reel consists of two hubs connected by two or more arms, S, upon which the wire is wound.
It is evident that the reel may be of a length sufficient to extend the whole lengthof the portion of the shaft between the wheels, or it 1 may be made smaller, as occasion requires.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The apparatus is turned over on one side and the upper wheel removed, the hinged portion of the frame being thrown back for the purpose. The reel is then placed on the shaft and the sleeves secured in the hub or hubs, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The apparatus is then turned up in proper position 011 the wheels, the free'end of the wire is attached to the fence-post, and by drawing the apparatus away from the said post it may be paid out in a continuous line, ready to be secured to successive posts in a convenient manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, in a reel for holding and distributing wire in the construction of wire fences, of the shaft or axle mounted upon wheels, the flanged wheel provided with internal cogs, the intermeshing pinions, the frustum-shaped sleeves provided with longitudinal feathers or ribs, and thereel adapted to be secured on the said shaft by means of the sleeves, the whole adaptedto operate substantially in the manner specified.
2. The combination, withthe shaft, theloose sleeves mounted thereon, and the gearing for actuating the reel, of the hinged frame, whereby the reel may be attached and detached, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
