United States Patent O 3,009,667 i FENCING TOOL FOR UNROLLING BARBED WIRE Paul W. Browne, R.F.D. 2, Roodhouse, Ill., assignor of fifty-one percent to himself and John C. Andras, jointly, and forty-nine percent to Lloyd Martin and Frank A. Thomas, jointly, all of Winchester, Ill.
Filed Jan. 16, 1958, Ser. No. 709,359 1 Claim. (Cl. 242-94) The present invention generally relates to a fencing tool and more particularly to a device useful so that one man may handle a roll of barbed wire without having to actually carry or pack the wire since'the wire can be unrolled from the present invention while the same is sitting in a vertical position or can be unrolled along the ground surface by pulling the tool along such surface.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fencing tool in the form of a carrier for a spool of barbed wire incorporating a structural arrangement in which the spool of barbed wire may be unrolled when the carrier is anchored with the spool rotatable about a vertical axis so that the strand of barbed wire may be pulled outwardly or when the strand of barbed wire is anchored and the -spool unrolled along the ground surface by pulling the tool behind the operator.
Other objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of operation, adaptation for its particular purposes, ease of manipulation and relative inexpensive manufacturing cost.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more Ifully hereinafter described Iand claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the fencing tool of the present invention illustrating one way in which the same may be used;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational View of the tool of the present invention illustrating a second way in which it may be used;
FIGURE 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of FIGURE 1 illustrating the details of construction of the fencing tool; and
FIGURE 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially Iupon a plane passing along section line 4 4 illustrating the manner in which the axle is secured to the fra-me.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates the fencing tool of the present invention for use in conjunction with a spool of barbed Wire with the spool being designated by the numeral 14 and the barbed wire being designated by the numeral 16.
The device of the present invention includes a tubular axle which may be in the form of a piece of pipe designated by the numeral 18 which extends through the spool barbed wire and has mounted thereon a pair of circular plates 20 with a laterally extending peripheral flange 22 generally formed in wheels. The plates 20 are each provided with a hub 24 at the center thereof with a setscrew 26 extending through the same for iadjustably and removably locking the plates 20 to the pipe 18. Disposed between one of the plates 20 and the spool of barbed wire is a spacer or washer designated by the numeral 28 for a purpose described hereinafter.
Detachably connected to the outer ends of the tubular pipe 18 is a pair of angle iron frame members 30 and 32 which converge inwardly and terminate in spaced parallel portions 34 receiving therebetween an elongated tubular handle or tongue 36 with fastening bolts 38 securing the ICO same in position. While the arrangement is made for standard size wire spools, removable shims may be provided for positioning between the handle 36 and the longitudinal portion 34 of the frame elements 30 and 32 respectively for varying the spacing between the ends of the frame elements 30 and 32. Rigid with and perpendicular to the elongatedl handle 36 is a tutbular handle member 40 by which the tool of the present invention may be pushed yor pulled. Also provided on the tubular handle or tongue 36 is a pair of spaced spring clips 42 detachably receiving the elongated shankl 44 of Aan anchor member which is pointed at one end which is designated by numeral 46 and provided'with a .looped shapedfhandle 48 at the other end. The rod 44 extends through the handle ,'48 to the transverse portion 50 thereof whereby an impact instrument may be employed for driving the pointed end 46 of the rod 44 downwardly into the ground surface 52 after the rod 44 has been inserted through the transverse tubular handle member 40 whereby the pipe 18 may be disposed in vertical position with the spool 14 being rotatable -about the pipe 18 on a vertical axis. In this position, the spool 114 will rest against the spacer 28 thus facilitating the rotation of the spool 14. shown in FIGURE 2, a small recess 54 may be provided in the ground surface for receiving the edge of the 4frarne element 32 whereby the lower plate 20 will be disposed generally parallel to the ground surface so that the pipe 18 will be disposed substantially in a true vertical f manner. Therecess 54 may be provided with a shovel or actually by using a heavy shoe or the like depending upon the terminal end of the vertical flange is formed as a box member preferably and a bolt 58 extends therethrough. The bolt 518 has a latch plate or retainer plate i60 mounted on the lower end thereof with the retainer plate 60 having an upturned lip `62 on the forward edge thereof for engagement with the bottom edge of the downturned flange 56 for locking the plate K60 in underlying relation to the pipe 18. The upper end of the bolt 5=8 is provided with a spring 64 and a retainer nut 66 whereby the plate 60 may be grasped and pulled downwardly and then pivoted about the axis of the bolt 58 to an out-oftheway position so that the frame may be lifted off of the pipe 1.8 thus permitting removal and replacement of the barbed wire spool. Since there is very little force exerted on the plate 60, the spring 64 need not be too strong but the nut 66 may be provided for tensioning the same to assure that while the plate 60 will retain the frame on the pipe 118, the same may be released by :applying manual pressure thereto.
The unrolling device of the present invention may be used by anchoring the free end of the barbed wire 16 and unrolling the same from the spool by pulling the tool along over the ground surface. The spool 14 projects just slightly beyond the plates 20 for providing traction to the spool so that the same will unroll against the ground surface to prevent lany possibility of the spool spinning freely thus loosening a multiplicity of turns of the barbed wire on the reel thus eliminating any possibility of tangling and kinking since rotation of the spool will be positive and in direct proportion to the linear distance traversed. If it is desired to unstring the Wire in the position shown in FIGURE 2, it is only necessary to turn the device so that the pipe 18 is disposed in vertical position after In positioning the tool '10 in the position` which the stake or spike 44 is driven into the ground surface through the transverse tubular handle member 40.
'I'he foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A device for aiding in the unreeling of wire on a spool comprising a generally U-shaped frame having an elongated handle member extending from the bight portion thereof, a transverse hollow member at the free end of said handle member forming hand grips and adapted to receive an anchoring tool when disposed in the vertical position, an axle journaled between the free ends of t-he in horizontal or vertical position, and means detachably mounting the ends of the axle on the ends of the legs of the frame, said means including a downwardly opening vrecess in the outer end of each leg of the frame whereby the recess may receive the ends of the axle by downward movement onto the axle, and a closure plate for said recess for yretaining the axle in the recess, said closure plate being spring biased into engagement with the lower edges of the recess and being swingable to an out-of-theway position for permitting removal of the axle from the recesses.
