To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I AL A E. RAvEnsoRon-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angel-es and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Single ZDisk Pay Out and Take-Up lVire Reels, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to reels for handling bundles or coils of wire in erecting telegraph lines, telephone lines, wire fences and the like.
An object of this invention is to provide improvements in reels whereby one man, or where it is practical two men, can transport and handle the wire without a t uck, and whereby .one man may handle the reel ,in horizontal or vertical position.
In carrying out this invention I employ a frame having rails that project forwardly and rearwardly of a reel that is mounted to revolve on said frame; said rails adapting the device for sled-like use or for litter-like use, and I have provided the top edges of said rails with loops at their ends whereby attachments may be made to the frame for sliding it along the ground .or for carrying it by hand, and also torhoisting the frame up a pole. The reel is provided with a frame or .carrier comprising parallel duplicate rails 1 on the opposite ,ends and reel side of which are bolted cast iron handles 2 by bolt-s3. Said rails are connected by intermediate cross-bars 4, mortised in the rails and located far enough inwardly from the ends tudinal slot 10 on one side of thecenter and with a hole 11 on the other side as shown in 'Fig. 5 of the drawing. An eyebolt extends through the slot 10, and has a chain 13, carried by the eye terminal of the bolt, and a winged nut 14 is adapted to tighten the bolt.
In the hole 11, there is a bolt 15 which is provided at one end with a winged nut 16 and at its opposite end with a hook 1'? for engagement with one f the links or the chain, so as to supportthe time an up right position against a suitable support for instance, post 18 around which the chain may he passed as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The reel 9 comprises a casting or thinible 19 is provided with a flange 20. At the base there is another flange 21 and at the top 522 there is a square to allow for a handle Th casting 19 fits over and rotates on the spindle 6.
A sheet metal disc 24 riveted to the flange 20 by rivets 25. In the disc 24 are six radial slots 26 equally spaced as best shown in Fig, 5 of the drawing In the slots 26 there are prongs 27 around which the wire is wound as shown in Fig. l. of the drawing.
The prongs 27 are provided at one end with a winged nut 28 to allow for adjustment and to clamp the prongs.
The disc 24 is provided with holes 29 equally spaced to allow the wire guide and lock arm 30 to fit thereinto for locking the reel 9.
The wire guide and lock arm 30 comprises a shank 31 which fits on a post 3-2 that extends at right angles to the plane of the frame and is held firm by nuts 33 in that port-ion of the diagonal bar 5 which extends beyond the rails. A set screw 34-. holdsthe wire guide and lock arm 30 in place, and an eyelet 35 is used as a wire guide which is next to the shank 31. On the other end of the lock arm 30 is a stud 36 to fit into holes 29 in the disk for locking; the reel as best shown in Fig 4 of the drawings.
A brake is provided in the form of a rod 37 inclined at a slight angle, one end 38 forming a semi-circular loop around the casting 19 between the flanges 20 and 21 and at the other end a winged nut 89 is provided to abut against a bracket 10 which is bolted to the extending end of oar 5 and the brake can be adjusted by the wingnut 39. To keep the handle from sliding off the top of casting 19. a cotter pin 41 is used.
The drawings show the device in two positions, one being upright chained to an electric pole and another a horizontal position. It is understood it may be used in other ways.
To operate with this device, the attendant turns the handle 23 which in turn rotates the reel disc 24 taking up or winding the wire around the prongs 27 and the wire is guided by the wire guide and stop 30.
To prevent racing and to regulate the speed of the reel, I provide a brake rod 37 with one end 38 partly surrounding the hub of the casting 19, and the other end is held by a bracket 40 and a wing nut 39 which is .used to adjust the brake rod 37 as ma he desired.
The reel is locked by stoppingthe disk when one of the holes 29 is alined with the axis of the stud 36, and the wire guide and lock 30 is released by loosening set screw 3 1 and is allowed to slide down the post 32 to insert the stud into the hole 29 and then the set screw 341- is tightened holdingthe lock 30 firm and locking the reel. The coil of wire is then removed hy releasing the wing nuts 28 on the prongs 27 and turning the prongs inwardly; and the coil of wire is then lifted off the reel.
To mount the wire for unwinding, the coil is laid on the disc and the prongs are turned outwardly and slipped into position and clamped to hold the wire coil firmly. The operation of winding the wire is similar to paying it out, except that the disc revolves in an opposite direction.
The cast iron handles 2 are in the form of rigid loops on the upper side of the frame and are suiiiciently outside the rim of the disk to allow a person between the rail. to carry the end of the frame litterwise by the handles without any interference with the disk of the reel.
I claim.
The linemans reel substantially set forth comprising a frame having rails; cross bars connecting said rails together; a diagonal bar connecting said rails and having one end extending beyond one of said rails; and axle secured to said diagonal bar; a thimble rotatably mounted on' said axle and having a flange and a squared portion: a disc secured to said flange; radially adjustable pron secured to said disc; a post secured to the ex tending end of said diagonal bar; a wire guide and lock arm carried by said post; a bracket secured to said frame: a rod having one end engaging said spindle and its other end extending through'said bracket; and means abutting against said bracket to adjust the rod against said spindle.
