specification.
This invention relates to winding -machines 0r reels, and more especially to that class thereof adapted for reels of wire,
either for unwinding or winding, and .which may be transported from place to place as required, and it has for one of its 0lO]CtS the provision ofan improved mechanism for connecting and disconnecting the main arbor of the reel with a'member adapted tfo'be manually rotated for winding purposes.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved adjustable guide for controlling thewire during the winding and unwinding period, this guide being adapted to be swung out of the way to permit a fresh reel to be inserted into the frame of the machine.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and be particularly defined in the claim.
The invention has been clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar characters denote similar parts, and in which- Figure 1 is a top View of a wire-winding machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section substantially on line 3, 3, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the wire guide. Fig. 5 shows one end view of the reel fitted for use in the machine. Fig. 6 is a face view of the reel-controlling member.
Referring to the drawing, 10, lO denote a pair of side frames upon which the reel contrdlling members are mounted, and which are supported by wheels 11, 11 journaled on trunnions 12, 12 which are rigidly held in brackets 13,13 secured by the side frames, 10, 10", respectively, as is clearly shown in Fi 1.
in order to avoid interference with the wire reel, the side frames 10 and 10 are connected integrally by a drop member or strap 14 which also acts as a spacer member to keep the brackets 13, 13 properly spaced to receive between them the wire reel and its driving mechanism. The latter comprises preferably a sprocket Wheel 15, the spindle ing across the top of the same.
16 ofwhich is'journaled in the bracketlB above mentioned, and the hub 15 of which is provided-with a polygonal recess 17 to receive a correspondingly shaped driver 18 secured to the reel-carrying shaft 19. The
other end of this shaft is journaled in the bracket 13 which is provided with a vertical slot 20 "permitting the insertion of the shaft-end into place, where it may be held by a" cotter pin or. similar device 21 extend- The driver 18is provided with a pair the reel bars, such as '23, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, so that after the pin'21 has been removed, that end of the shaft 19 can be raised out of the bracket 13, through the slot 20, and the entire shaft 19, together with the reel, can then be readily slid side,-
wise or longitudinally of the shaft to bring the driver 18 out of the recess 17.
5f "clutch fingers 22 adapted to straddle one of It should be noted that in the present ini stance the reel shaft 19is disposed directly in a vertical line above the wheel trunnions 12, 12, so that by this manner of support, the wheels will take the entire load ofthe reel and the wire containedthereon, without laying any hardship onto the operator of the machine, other than that of manipulating the overhanging side bars 10, 10, the free ends of which are connected by a hand bar 24, whereby the machine in its entirety may be transported from place to place.
The sprocket wheel 15 is connected by a chain 25 with a sprocket 26 secured upon a transverse shaft 27 which is journaled in bearings 28, 28 and has a crank 29 whereby the rotation of the reel in either direction is controlled.
A brace 30 extending from one side frame to the other may serve to hold the latter in substantially horizontal position so that the.
clamped against the bar 32 by handle nuts bar 32. The other-ends of the wire guide members 33, 34, maybe connected as shown member whereby the reel is rotatably con- 7 partly in section in Fig.4:, which illustrates the member 33 as having a reduced portion 2, itbeing by dot-and-dash lines 32 understood that under ordinary 33" adapted to telescope-intothe tubular portion 34" of the other member 34. It should be noted that a guide wheel indicated by dot-and-dash lines i for rotationasv well as longitudinal movetirely'out of the way into the position shown indicated in Fig.
7 conditions the braokets13,' 13 serveas supports upon which the side members of the frame 32can rest. 7
Changes may be made in the general organization as well as in the particular a construction of some of the elements of my 41 m y e, Pr v d improved machine without departingirom the spirit of the invention, especially in the manner of controlling the rotation of the reel,- as well as in the formation of the clutch necte d'with its supporting shaft.
In mahine of the character described, the combination with a reel-holder, and a 7 frame supporting the same; of a wire guide consisting of a pair of *side membersfacing each other and having their horizontal p'orone into the other, and
tions telescoping means for adjustably positioning the vertiframe. v w is In-testnnony whereofl; affix 'my signacal portions of said side-members to the ture in presence of two witnesses. r
