Application filed June as, 1923. Serial No; 648,294.
and'Pay-Out l/Vire Reel, of which the following is a specification. v
An object of this invention is to provlde means whereby the work of linemen in erect ing electric light, telegraph and telephone lines can be greatly facilitated and the labor 7 reduced.
The invention is also applicable for repair work on such lines and for placing and for removing barbed wire for fences and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide means adapted to be mounted on and to be carried by a wagon or a truck and whereby wire may be simultaneously or successively paid out and taken up.
In this invention I have provided a single portable frame with reels, one above another to be revolved on such frame; and which frame and reels can be easily mounted on, fixed to and removed from the vehicle adapted to transportation.
Strength and simplicity of construction are further objects.
An object is to permit the use of two kinds of wire at the same time and to enable the paying out and taking up of each of the wires by only one man.
The invention includes the novel construction of frame and'the various parts and combinations of parts whereby a plurality of coils of wires can be loaded on, carried, paid out and'taken up, in or from any direction. r
Another object is wide range for leading wire from the lower reel. I
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanyingdrawings, the subjoineddetail description and the appended claims.

The appliance is adapted to be variously positioned and for. convenience will now be described as in the position shown in the There are two reels ;f viz, a'bottom reel R and a top reel T mounted on a frame'or carrier. Y
The frame or carrier 1 comprises two members 2 and. 3, one twice as long'as the other and both formed of channel iron bent webwise, that is to say, with its web inside the bend, into suitable form and fastened together at their ends. T The member 2 is formed as a loop and hasv on each side of its center, three bends a, b and 0, thus forming a central horizontal crown limb Z, two oblique side limbs 6, two side uprights f and two bottom limbs 9 having base terminals .h near the axis of the carrier. The member 3 practically corresponds tofone-half of the member 2 having corresponding bends it of the three members are fastened to a base center piece 4 by'suitable means as rivets 5. .Said center piece is vertically beneath the top center or crown piece 6 which is fixed to the crown limb cl by suitable means as rivets 7 passed through the web i ofthe channel iron.v r
' The lower bends c are adapted to form supporting feet from which the limbs 9 converge upwardly toward a center so that when the feet rest on a suitable support as the platform or fioor A. of-the vehicle B, the other parts will be free from. the floor, and
bolts C.
I The bottom center piece 4 is shown cen trally raisedgorarched and'the orown of the arch has a central threaded hole j which is alined with a threaded hole k in the upper end; at; the limb (Z, and the. center crQWI pie e a 8 and 8 are axially alined axles for the upper and lower reels. The center pieces 4; and 6 may beofiron or any other-suitable material cast or otherwise formed and the axles 8 and 8 are screwed into the holes 76 and 1'. e pect y, nd a e P o id d. at their tops with transverse holes 9 for cotter pins 9'.
A braoket bearing 10 rests upon the upper center piece 6 to support; the thimble 11 which fits the axle 8' and. isprovided with a hub12; at. its bottom to rest upon the bearing 10. A corresponding thimble 11 provided with a l1 ub '12 rests upon the lower center piece 4:. Said thimblesare provided respectively with broadflanges l3 and: 13 an li p nth ae fla g e. re i s s and l l'are fixed respectively by rivets 15-.

' The reel disk 14: is a plate or sheet of metal and is downwardly rounded and fianged atits periphery as at 20 forrigidity. In'the disk 14: there are radial slots 21 equally spaced apart as best shown in Fig. 20f the di awing and in said slots there are adjustably mountedj prongs 22' around whichthe wire is wound as shown in Fig.1. The prongs 22; are adjustablyheld in place by winged nuts 23 for adjustment of the p ong ndtocl mpthe p ng place- Each reel diskis provided with holes 2& similarly disposed and" equally spaced to BQ i Q- dete s. 32 e im Par s of th Qmbi'n ire g de nd. Said? bracket rests on and is supportedby the crown or top piece 6.
The guide rod 27 supports a wire guiding eyelet 31 that is between the clamp 26 and v the detent 32. Said detent is adapted to fit into tlIQhOl'BS 251 in the disk for locking the reel and eyelet in fixed relation to each other, as shown in Fig. def: the drawings.
Theftop brake comprises a hooked rod 33 horizontally arranged and having one end 34 termed in. a semi-circular hookaround the thimble 11 between the flanges 12' and 13 anchthe other-end has, a winged; nut 3t to-engage an abutment. 36which extends up from the bracket 29, and through which the b ke fi'iex nds; By i t-nine t e ne" nut; thebrake may be adjustedte afiord he.- de red. tio of h 1 -0k, P95 the thimble, thus to prevent the reel from racmg.
The bracket 29 rests on the top of the frame 1 andformsa bearing for the hub 12 of the thimble 11. A set screw 3'7. holds it firm and allows the guide rod 27- to be movedto any desired angle.
The bracke't29 is only used for the top reel; The lower reel-has a brakein the form of a rod 38 inclined at an angle with one end 39 forming a semi-circle around the casting 1'1 between the flanges l2 and 13 and atthe other endis provid'ed with a wing nut 40 "engaging a bracket 41' that supports therod at itso'uter end and is boltedfdown to the platform floor A of the wagon or truck; and the brake for the lowerreel-ean be adjusted by turning the winged 'nut/10.
As shown in the drawings the prongs on the lower reel disk are 'shorterfthan the prongs on the top reel disk to allow enough room to clear the frame when the reel' is in use. No handle is shown on the lower reelas the workmen prefer to turn the same by directly grasping the disk or the prongs to turn it.
By making the frame fthe loop 2 and brace 3- as shown, wide range of direction is allowed the wire on the lower reel. and such wire may be led away through a range of nearly 180 without interferenee of the frame, the top reel has the full range of 360, although such range is seldomf require'dand'can be securedby simply turning the vehicle as desired.
The prongs 22 are of the usual curved form and maybe swung round in their slots so as to allow a. coil ofwire to be put over the prongs to encircle the same and to rest on the disks and to be heldinposition while the wire is paid out from or wound on to the coil; 'thepaying out being-effected by running the wire through the 'eyeand drawing it out in the required direction; and the winding upbeing effected by-turning the diskby crank or otherwise.
I claim:
