My invention relates to improvements in clothes line reels, and :one of itsyobjects is the provision of areel of this character which shall embody novel means through the medium of which one end of a clothes line may be readily and quickly .secured to or disconnected from the meet, and Which shall embody novel handle by means of which the reel may be held against c'asual movementduring the winding of :the clothes line thereon or during the unwinding of the clothes linetherefrom. p 1

The clothes line is adapted to be Wound about the .end members 2 between the guards 3, :and any one of the guards is adapted to be employed for the purpose 'ofconnecting one end of the clothes line to the reel. 7 While the reel may be formed from a bar or a tube of any suitable metal or from a flat strip of iron or steel, it is preferably formed from :a singlelength of stout wire. To secure a clothes line to the reel through the medium of one of the eyes 7 it is only necessary to provide a knot in the clothes line near an end thereof and pass that end into a selected eye through the passage 10 communicating with such eye. To secure one end of the clothes line to the reel through the medium of a pair of the gripping elements or

8 and 9, it is only necessary to pass that end of the clothes line between the selected pair of gripping elements or jaws.

In Figure 2 there is illustrated a slight modification of the reel, and as here illustrated the reel may be provided between its handle and the side member to which the handle is secured with additional clothes

line retaining eyes

As shown in Figure 5, the reel may be provided witha metal handle 6 which is secured to one of the side members 1 by rivets 6 or in any other suitable manner. When the reel is provided with the metal handle, the ends of the strip of material from which the reel is made are united by being twisted together in the manner indicated by the numeral 11 in Figure 5.

In the modified form of the reel shown in Figure 4-, the guards are not deflected but extend straight beyond the end members 2, and they are not provided with gripping elements or jaws. The guards here illustrated are designated 3, and they are formed to provide elongated clothes line retaining eyes 3 This form of the reel is provided with the metal handlefi, and in this form the side member 1 to which the handle is secured is bent as at 12 to provide, in connection with the adjacent parts of the handle, clothes line retaining eyes 7.

The reel'shown in Figure 6, is made up of several pieces of suitable material, and it comprises side members 1, end members 2, The end members 2 are provided with} angular attaching portions 2 which are secured to the side members 1 byrivets 2. The side member 1 to which the handle 6 is secured is bent as at 12 to provide, in'connection with the it is light in weight and it may therefore be easily held in one hand while the other is being employed for the purpose of winding and sold at a comparatively low cost. As the handle is secured to the clothes line reel against any movement with respect thereto, the reel may be held against casual movement during the application thereto or the removal therefrom of a clothes line.

It should be understood that the drawing is merely illustrative and does not pretend to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawing is illustrative of merely the preferred constructions of my improved clothes line reel, it being my expectation that various further modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

What is claimed is 1. A clothes line reel comprising side members one of which is offset to provide a handle carrying element, a handle secured to-said element, end members, guards extending beyond the end'memb'ers, and the offset portion being bent to provide clothes line retaining eyes.

1 2. Aclothes line reel of the character set forth having one of the side members thereof provided with inwardly indented portions, a handle secured to said side member adjacent said indentations and cooperating with said indentations to provide clothes line retaining eyes.
