UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.
JOHN J'. lVIIIOLCAR, OF FOREST PARK, ILLINOIS.
REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent. .Patented Jah. 9, 1912.
Application filed December 3, 1910.' Serial No. 595,461.
wire forming said body 1 is twisted about the upper end portion of the central portion 4 of said body and along one side of the upper loop 2, the same terminating at 7 to form a laterally projecting winding handle upon which is provided a loosely mount- Yed grip 8. It will be noted that the winding handle projects from the side of the body 1 opposite to that from which the axial handle projects so that when the latter is held in one vhand the former may be readily engaged byfthe other.
Arranged in the plane of rotation of the body 1 is a guide loop'f9 through which the line or cord may pass, the same servin to guide the same for correct coiling or winding upon the body 1. The loop 9 is formed at the outer extremity of the stem or shank 10, the inner extremity of the latter being coiled about the grip 6 at the inner extremity thereof, said extremity of said shank being rigidly secured to the grip 6 by reason of one of the extremities A11 of the wire forming said shank and guide loop engaging a recess 11 formed for the reception thereof in the inner extremity of said grip 6. Said guide loop being in rigid connection with the grip 6 t-he same may be securely held in any position by the hand engaging said grip when the device is in operation.
The body 1 is reinforced by a diagonally extending wire member 12 the central portion of which is coiled about the portion 4 of the body 1 at the center thereof, the extremities of the member 12 being twisted about the other ends of the loops 2 and also the secure extremities thereof serving to rigidly maintain said loop extremities in spaced relation. The terminals of the member 12 are formed to constitute spring engaging members 13 affording means for securing the extremities of the line or cord wound upon the reel. Arranged at the inner extremity of the axial handle of the body 1 is a circular disk or plate 14, the latter being rigidlysecured to the portion 4 of the body 1 and the reinforcing wire 12 by means of ears 15 which are preferably punched from said member 14. The member 14 thus serves as additional means of reinforcing the structure, and when the device is in use, the thumb of the hand engaging the grip 6 may be pressed against the same in order to serve as ka prevent too rapid uncoiling of the material wound upon the reel.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. MoLoAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Forest Park, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels,'of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in reels and more specifically to that class thereof especially adapted for use in winding up clothes lines.
The object of my invention is the provlsion of a reel of the character mentioned which will be' of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lith these objects in view my invention consists in a reel characterized as above mentioned and incertain details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to thev accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reel embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional detail through the axial handle of the reel illustrating the manner of connecting the stem or shank of the guide loop thereto, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modication.
In the preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawings the body 1 of the reel is formed of a single piece of wire. The respective ends of said wire are rst bent back upon each other forming elongated loops 2 at the extremity of said body. Each loop 2 is then bent back upon itself in U- form, a saddle 3 being thus formed at the extremities of the body 1 for the reception of line, cord or other material wound upon the reel. Said loops 2 are so bent that the central portion 4 of the body 1 extends diagonally between said loops. The ends of said wire and the central portion thereof are then twisted together, the extremity 5 thereof being bent laterally from the center of portion '4 of the body 1 to constitute an axial handle. Loosely mounted upon the extremity 5 is a grip 6, the arrangement being such that when said grip is held in the hand, preferably the left hand, the body 1 may be rotated about the extremity 6 thereof as an axis. The opposite end of the brake so as to 11o vention into eifect this may be varied some; what without departing from the spirit of the invention,- henqe I do not desire to limit myself to the exact details set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modiications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A reel, formed of a single piece of wire. having its ends bent back upon each other forming elongated loops 2, each loop being bent upon itself in U-form to form a saddle .3, the ends of said wire being twisted together to form a portion L1 extending diagonally between said loops and one end 5 bei axia C extended laterally to form an handle; a handle 6 on end 5; a diagonally VIn the modification shown in Fig. 3 the loop 2 at the lower extremity of the body 1 is formed with only one side 16, the wire of said body instead of being bent outwardly and downwardly to form the other side of the loop or of the recess at the extremity of said body being brought straight across from the lower extremity of the portion 4 to form a pivotal bar 16. Pivotally mounted upon the portion 16 is a loop 17, the sides of said loop being formed with eyes or loops 18 which embrace said portion 16 at the 'ex-Y tremities thereof. The loop 17, as will be observed, is formed of a single piece of wire which is bent back upon itself the extremities of said wire being twisted together to form a shank 19 the lower extremity of which is adapted to engage the outer extremity of the loop portion 16 as at 20, serving to releasably hold the loop 17 in operative position. With this construction it will be seen that one side of the engaging jaw at the extremity of the body 1 may be swung outwardly so as to permit of ready removal of the material wound upon the reel if desired. Y A
A reel of the construct-ion set forth is durable and economical, the same may be readily and easily operated, and is not susc'eptible to readily become inoperative.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my 1ning extending reinforcing wire 12, the ends of which are twisted around the outer ends of loops 2 and portion 4 and extended to form spring engaging members'l; and handle 8 secured to one of loops 2, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
