JOHN E. MANDEVILIIE, OF HAVLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,060, dated December 10, 1889..
Application filed July 5, 1889- Serial No. 316,526. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN E. MANDEVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawley, Vayne county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in reels specially designed for reeling various kinds of fibrous materials-such, for instance, as silk, yarn, cordage, dre.; and my invention consists in the novel structure hereinaft-er fully set forth, in which the outer carryingbars of the reel are readily adjustable to and from the supporting-shaft to facilitate the easy and expeditious removal from the reel of the material wound thereon.
My invention also consists in combining with the adjustable carrying-bars means for temporarily locking the parts in position after adjustment, and, if desired, so as to adapt the reel for winding skeins of different sizes.
In lthe drawings, Figure l` is a side elevation of a reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View.
The reel-shaft A is provided at its ends with journals d, as usual, While the body portion thereof is preferably rectangular in crosssection, and at the opposite sides of the shaft at the points b c are pivoted arms B, midway of their length. These arms, as shown, are arranged in pairs, and the alternate pairs of arms are placed at right angles to each other, suitable space being left between them to permit independent movement on their pivots. Between t-he outer ends of the arms B are pivotally secured the carrying-bars C, extending parallel to the reel-shaft in the ordinary manner.
Owing to the arrangement ofthe outer carrying-bars C in ,1J-airs, they may be readily swung to and from the supporting-shaft to facilitate the removal of the material wound upon the reel orl to vary the diameter of the latter to make or hold skeins of different sizes, as desired.
To lock the parts in position after adjustment, a cleat cl is preferably secured at one end to the inner edge of one of the bars C of each pair, while its opposite or free end is curved inward and projects between the arms B at one end of the reel, a bolt e, passing through the arms and provided with a thumbnut f, serving to clamp the cleat and arms rmly together.
If it is desired to use the reel only for winding skeins of a uniform size, one of the cli afs, where the bars are arranged to swing in pairs, may be dispensed with, in which case the rivets connecting the alternate arms B to the shaft are tightened to increase the fvrictional contact between the parts and prevent the liability to accidental displacement of the bars C. In this case, however, the bars may be adjusted by force applied by the operator, if so desired, the rivets of the arms carrying the other pair of bars O being suiiiciently loose to render their ready adjustment permissible upon unscrewing the thumb-nut, as will be apparent.
To prevent the abrasion of the bars C by contact with the swinging arms B, and to facilitate the free movement of the parts, metal washers or bushings g are set into recesses in the bars C, as shown in Fig. 3, and the outer ends of the arms are clamped against the bushings by the connecting rivet or bolt.
Vit-hout limiting myself to the exact construction shown, I claiml. In a reel, the combination of the shaft, the arms pivoted thereto at right angles to each other, as described, and the outer carrying-bars pivoted to the ends of the arms, substantially as set forth.
2. In a reel, the combination of the rectangular shaft, the pairs of arms arranged at right angles to each other, as described, and pivoted to the opposite sides of the shaft, carrying-bars pivotally connected to the ends of the arms, and a locking device, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN E. MANDEVILLE.

ELIAS STANTON, WM. KIMBLE.
