J. A. ORANDALL.
ALPHABETICAL TOY. N0. 298,290. Patented May 6,1884.
M Emmi N. PETERS. Prwto-utbognpher. Wuhingium D- Q NITED TATES JESSE A. ORANDALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
ALPHABETICAL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,290, dated May 6, 1884.
Application filed March 26, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn A. CRANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alphabetical Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref.- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention has for its objects to provide an improved alphabetical toy or series of toys that will be entertaining as well as instructive for children. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents aperspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the letters set up. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same.
The letter Gindicates two corresponding letters of the alphabet, A A and B B being shown in the present instance. These letters are cut or stamped out of stiff paper, pasteboard, or other material, and are provided at the top and bottom with curved slots 0, through which the curved tenons d of the two cross-pieces D may be passed, so as to form an upright frame that will stand securely on its base in an upright 1 position.
The said letters and cross-pieces may be ornamented with any suitable designs, or left plain, if preferred.
The letterEindicates agravitating balanced rocker, which is also cut or stamped out of stiff paper, pasteboard, or other suitable material. The said rocker at its top is made of sufficient width to form an ornamental shield or ground, F, upon which are printed or otherwise produced the small letters of the alphabet corresponding with the capital letters con stituting the frame. At the front of the shield is a figure, G, of an animal or other object, the initial letter of the name of which corresponds to the letters forming the frame and carried on the shield. The rocker is provided with two pointed studs, H,which are preferably formed of a single piece of sheet metal (No model.)
bentso as to clasp thelower edge of the shield or upper part of the rocker at I, as shownin Fig. 4 of the drawings, and be thereby fastened to the rocker. The lower end of the rocker may be ornamented by pictures of animals or other objects, or in any desired manner. The shield or ground, as well as the remaining parts of the rocker, may be ornamented in any suitable manner, and spaces may be left on the shield or ground for short verses illustrative of the use of the respective letters. as initial letters of the animal represented, or other object having the same initial. It will be understood that each letter and figure will have its appropriate verses, as shown in the drawings.
The supportingletters are put together as described above and clearly shown in the drawings, andthe rocker is placed upon the upper cross-piece, resting on the points of its studs, so as to rock or oscillate freely, and, as will readily appear, furnish instruction as well as amusement for children.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In an alphabetical toy, the supportingletters having curved slots, and the cross-pieces provided with curved tenons to fit the slots and form a frame for the rocker, substantially as specified.
2. The rocker provided with a ground or shield upon which letters or verses may be applied, substantially as specified.
3. The rocker provided with a shield or ground for letters or other devices, and with the figure of an animal or other-object, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of thesupporting-frame, formed of letters of the alphabet, as described, and the connecting cross-pieces of a balanced rocker with pointed studs, which rest upon the upper cross-piece of the frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JESSE A. GRANDALL.
