ANDREW IGRAHAM. FHOTO-UTHO.WASHINGTON, D C.
NITED STATES 'ATENT FFICE.
HENRY P. BAILEY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
PAPER DOLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,410, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed June 25, 1895. Serial No. 554,002. (No model) To all whom zit may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY P. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Dolls, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to an improved paper doll of that class which is used for the amusement of children, and in which a double body folded at the shoulders is used in connection with a detachable double head, so as to form an attractive paper doll, which can also be used to advantage as an advertising medium; and the invention consists of a paper doll composed of a double body that is folded up transversely at the shoulders and provided with a neck-opening between the folded shoulders and of a double head that is folded at its upper edge and provided with overlapping neck-pieces, which can be inserted into the neck-opening of the shoulders, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent respectively a front and a rear elevation of myimproved paper doll. Fig. 3 is a top view of the body of the doll laid out flat and showing in its outline the shape of the blank required for the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section of the paper doll on line 4 4, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a top view of the double head laid out flat and showing in its outline the shape of the blank required for the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 1
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the double body of my improved paper doll, which body is formed of overlapping front and rear portions that are connected at the shoulders and folded in a straight line across the shoulders, as shown clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. At the center of the double body A A and in line with the straight shoulders a a is arranged an opening a, into which is in serted a double folded-up head B B, which is folded at the upper edge of the hat portion at the point shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. The double head B B is provided with neck pieces d d, which are inserted into the neckopening a of the double body A A, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 4, said double head being retained in the opening of the double body by the friction of the front and rear portions of the latter with neck-pieces d d. The lower edges 6 of the double head B B are made straight so as to abut against and rest squarely on the straight shoulders of the body A A.
The front and rear portions of the double body A A are preferably made in different colors and designs, the front and rear of the double head B B being likewise made in. different designs and colors, so that its front and rear portions preferably match respectively the front and rear portions of the double body A A.
By transferring the double heads to different bodies a number of changes can be made in a series of dolls, so that they form attractive and amusing toy figures for children, which can at the same time be used for advertising purposes by printing the advertising matter on the inner sides of the double body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Apaper doll, composed of a double body folded at the shoulders and provided with a neck-opening between the shoulders, and of a double head folded at its upper edge and provided with two opposite neck-pieces that project from the lower part of the head and are adapted to be inserted into the neck-opening of the double body, substantially as set forth.
2. A paper doll, composed of a double body folded at the shoulders and provided with a neck-opening between the shoulders, and of a double head folded at its upper edge and provided with two opposite neck-pieces that project from the lower part of the head and are adapted for insertion into the neck-opening of the double body, the lower edges of the double head at each side of the neck-pieces being straight so as to abut against the shoulders, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY P. BAILEY.
