NITED STATES MARGARETTE E. \VILMER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 575,749, dated January 26, 1897.
' Application filed July 9, 1896. Serial No. 598,565. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARGARETTE E. WIL- MER, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Systems for Making Dolls or Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part there of, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to the manufacture or construction of dolls and other toy figures, and the object thereof is to provide an improved system for construction or forming dolls or other toy figures from pasteboard, cardboard, or other paper possessing strength and stiffness or from any suitable fabric possessing the required qualities.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure 1 is a view of a blank from which a toy or doll may be made, and Fig. 2 a face view of a doll made therefrom.
In the practice of my invention I employ a suitable sheet 5, of paper or similar material, and I print, paint, stamp, or otherwise form thereof a face view of a doll, as shown at 7,
I said View being composed of a head, body,
and a portion of the arms, and connected 1 therewith at the top of the head, as shown at 8, is a back View of the same figure, as shown at 9,said back view being also printed, painted stamped, or otherwise formed, and both of said views may be formed by a suitable stamp at the same time and may be colored as required. Each of these views has a portion of the arms connected therewith, as shown at 10, and the arm portions 10 of the back View are provided with segmental or crescentshaped marks 11, the convex sides of which are directed downwardly, and in the lower part of the skirt, as shown at 12, are formed similar marks, and I also stamp, print, paint, or otherwise form upon the same sheet the lower portion of the arms, as shown at 13, and the ends thereof, which represent the elbows, are provided with circular heads 14, and stamped, printed, painted,or otherwise formed upon the same sheet are the lower portion of the legs, as shown at 15, and said legs are provided at that portion thereof which represents the knees with circular heads or disks 16.
In formingthe doll or toy the figures 7 and 9, which represent the front and back thereof, are cut out in the usual manner, and segmental or crescent-shaped slots are form ed at 11 and 12, and the arms 13 and thelegs 15 are also cut out, and the circular heads or disks 14 of the arms are inserted through the slots 11, or that portion of the doll or toy which constitutes the back, and the circular disks or heads 16 of the legs are inserted through the slots 12, and the front and back are then folded together in the usual manner, and a face or front. view of a doll thus formed is shown in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that the front and back, after being out out and folded together as described, may also be sealed or otherwise secured together, and when thus formed it will be apparent that the arms and legs will be free to move laterally or otherwise and that the means by which they are connected with the body portion of the toy or doll when the latter is viewed from the frontwill be concealed. 1
It will be apparent that the front and back views may be connected at other parts thereof as well as at the head or instead of at the head, and my invention is not limited to the form of the figure, toy, or doll thus made, as various animals or representations thereof may be similarly formed.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A doll or toy which is formed by first stamping a front and back view of the figure to be formed on a suitable sheet of paper or similar material in such manner that said front and back views are connected at one point, and may be cut out and folded together so as to form the front and back of the figure,
said front and back consisting of a head, body portion, and a portion of the arms, said sheet being also provided with representations of the arms and legs, or the lower portion thereof, said arms and said legs being provided at the ends thereof, which represent the elbows and the knees with circular heads or disks and the back view of said figure being provided with circular or crescent-shaped marks in that portion of the arms which are formed thereon, and with similar marks in the lower portion of the body or skirt, substantially as shown and described.
2. A doll 01' toy which is formed by stamping a front and back view of the figure upon a sheet of paper or similar material, said front and back views each comprising the body portion, the head, and the upper portion of the arms, and being connected at the top of the head, said back View being also provided in that portion of the arms connected therewith, with curved or semicircular marks, and at the lower portion of the body with similar marks, said sheet being also provided with representations of the lower portions of the arms and legs, which are provided at the ends which represent the elbows and the knees with circular heads or disks said circular heads or disks being adapted to be inserted when out out through slots formed at the points where the curved or segmental marks are made in the back portion or view, after said back and front portions have been cut out and folded together, substantially as shown and described.
3. A doll, comprising front and back portions cut from a sheet of paper, and connected at one point, and adapted to be folded together, said front and back portions comprising the body, the head and the upper portion of the arms, the lower portion of the arms and legs being also cut from said sheet of paper, and provided at the ends thereof, which represent the elbows and knees with circular heads or disks which are inserted through slots, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of July, 1896.
