Description

W E. YOUNGER. ADVERTISING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 26,-1911.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. YOUNGER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM E. YOUNGER, a citizenof the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an advertising device, and more especially to the class of figure toys.
The primary object of the invention is the provisionof a device of this character in which the body thereof is shaped and printed to represent an article of merchandise; for instance, the face of a soap cake, while the head is shaped similar to a boiler or wash tub, the same being printed to represent a face, and the arms and legs are jointed, whereby on operating the same, the figure will dance and pose in various attitudes, simulating life-like positions. Thus, in this manner, the figure will attract attention and give amusement, thereby serving as an advertising medium, it being understood of course that the advertising indicia of the body and head of the figure may be varied according to the wishes of the distributer of the figure.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which represents an animated object, the same being provided with suitable configurations or indicia printed thereon, representing various mercantile commodities for displaying the same, and thereby serving as an advertising medium, the limbs of the figure being movable, so that the figure may be caused to assume various attitudes for attracting attention and giving amusement, when actuated by the possessor.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects, in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure'l is a front elevation of a figure toy constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is a frag- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept 10 1912,

mentary rear elevation, the same being partly broken away.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the figure comprises a body 5, the latter being preferably constructed from card-board or other stiff material, and may be of any desirable shape, although in this instance, itis shown substantially rectangular, with rounded corners, the front face of the body 5 being provided with a border 6, representing one face of a cake of soap, and indicia displaying the title or name of the soap as well as the maker thereof.
Formed at one end of the body 5 is a head 7 which may be of any desirable shape, and in this instance, is shown as the representa tion of a wash tub, the front face of the head 7 being provided with suitable configurations representing a human face or a character face.
Connected near the upper corners of the body 5 are swingingly mounted jointed arms, the forearms 9 being connected to the upper port-ions 10 of the arms by means of paper fasteners 11 forming pivots for the same, whereby the arms may be adjusted to assume different postures.
Connected near the lower corners of the body 5 are jointed legs, comprising outer and inner sections 12 and 13, respectively, the same being connected together by means of paper clips 14. forming pivots for the same, the arms and legs being connected to the body by means of similar paper clips 15 forming pivots for the said arms and legs, whereby they may move freely, so as to assume different postures.
Pasted or otherwise secured to the forearms, at the hand portions thereof, are rec tangular-shaped pieces 16, on the front faces of which are printed representations of a soap cake and a box having suitable indicia thereon to indicate. the nature of the soap branches 21 connected in any suitable man ner to the inner faces of the arms and legs, so that upon manipulation of the push and pull strip, the said arms and legs may be moved into different positions to suit the fancy of the possessor of the figure, for amusement purposes.
It is of course to be understood that the rear exposed surface of the body, head, legs and arms may be provided With suitable in dicia designating similar representations to those on the front of the figure, if desired.
That is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a body, jointed legs and arms pivotally connected adjacent the corners of said body, a head formed on said body, guide pieces, a push and pull strip slidably fitted in the openings in said guide pieces, and connections between the inner extremity of said strip and the arms and legs for moving the same.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM E. YOUNGER.
Vitnesses LESLIE B. ARNEs'r, JAs. F. ALLEN.
