Description

(No Model.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 2.
W. H. E
FIG T.
No. 582,625. Patentd May 18, 1897.
lill UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. EMERY, OF AUBURN, MAINE.
FIGURE TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,625, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed February 27, 1897. $erial No. 625,347. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in toys; and the object is to provide a toy which will be pleasing to both young and old and which may be made at a very small cost.
With this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy in one position. Fig. 2 is a similar view after the positions of the figures have been'changed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view, and Fig. 4. is a detail perspective View of the hoop and its operating-handle.
In the drawings, 1 represents a doubleheaded image or grotesque figure having four radiating arms 2, the ends of which are provided with notches 3. The heads and waists of the images are preferably of contrasting colors or designs, as shown, for a purpose hereinafter to appear.
4 denotes a bag which is made in the form of a skirt, and whichhas preferably contrasting sides and is provided at its lower end with a hem 6, within which is located the curved arms 7 of the compressible springhandle 8, the curved arms 7 forming a hoop and causing the bag or skirt to stand out at its lower end.
When the handle is grasped with the sprin garms engaging the notches in one set of arms of the figure, the head and clothing of one figure or image will be presented. Now by pressing the handle the image will drop and be concealed by the skirt, while the other image will come into view and be held in place by the spring-arms engaging the arms of the concealed or hidden image.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy composed of an image having sets of radiatingarms provided with notches, a bag secured to the intermediate portion of said image, a spring-hoop secured'to said bag and adapted to alternately engage the radiating arms of the image, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a double-headed image, having two sets of radiating arms provided with notches, of a skirt secured intermediate the ends of the image and provided with a hem, a compressible springhandle having curved arms forming a ring which is inclosed within the hem of the skirt and is adapted to engage the notches of the arms, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with a double-headed image of contrasting appearance provided with radiating notched arms, of a skirt intermediate to the ends of said image and having contrasting sides and provided with a hem, a hoop within the hem, and means for expanding the hoop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. EMERY.
