SPEGIFICATION forming pari? 0f LetterSPltnt N. 698,324, dated. April 22, 1.902.l
Application led October 18,l 1901. Serial No. 79,159.` `(No model.)
To all whom t nung/concern:
Be it known that I, om) o. sANeER, a @nr- State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be af ull, clear, and e'X-act description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in toys, and especially that class thereof known as dolls, animals, &c. Its object is to provide a toy of the above-described character with features which may be moved in an amusing and entertaining manner.
In the accompanying drawings, showing my invention applied to dolls, Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention.V Fig. 2 is alongi-r tudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the slide, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one yof the ears.
While I have shown my-invention applied to dolls, I do not Wish to limit myself to this specific application thereof. It is equally applicable and appropriate, forexample, to all sorts of toy animals. I am also aware that changes may bemade in'the preferred ernbodiment of my invention herein shown without sacrificing the spirit or principles thereof and the same remain intact andstill be protected.
In carrying out my invention I provide a hollow head l, having openings at the top and neck, and also openings 2 forthe eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, and suitably arranged therein a slide 3, the lower end of which projects down through the neck and serves as a handle 3a. Upon this slide 3 opposite their respective openings in the head are formed or secured eyes 3b, tongue 3?, and teeth 3d, and to the top thereof is secured, about centrally, a preferably flexible top 4 for the head, to which is attached the hair, and which is preferably secured to the head at its outer edges bysewing or other means.k Projecting through their correspondingopenings are ears 5 5 and a nose 6, which are retained against outward displacement by bosses' or flanges 5, 5, and 6, engaging the inner Wall of the head, and have inward extensions 5b, 5b, and 6b, which are let into or engage recesses or slots 7 in fparted to the features.
the slide 3. A link or wire 8 issuitably pivoted at one end to the lipfotl the mouth and -atthe opposite end within a slot 8 in the slide by, preferably, a pin 8b. Y
.In lieu of having the eyes formed onv the slideit is obvious that they may be movably mounted in sockets in the head and adapted to be turned or rolled by movement of the slide. v
In using my toy by reciprocating the slide longitudinally the eye, nose, ear', mouth, and
tongue'will all move simultaneously in an amusing and entertaining manner. .A By turningthe slideback and forth transversely a l very perceptible lateral movement will be im- It will also be observed that the lowering of the slide will tend to bring all the hair to the plane of the head, or the raising thereofwillcausethe same to spread. Although this effect maybe obtained by merely attaching theftop of the head to the slide, it may be materiallyncreased by also attaching the same to thehead.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and Vdesire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y l. In a toy of the characterdescribed, the combination of a hollow head having openings for the features of theface, a covering for said head, and a slide.con'nected to said covering and adapted tobe reciprocated within'said head, substantially as described.
2..' In" a toy of the character described, the combination of a hollow head. having openings for the features of the face,a slide adapted versely within said head, anda covering attached to said head and saidslide, substantially as described.
3. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a hollow head having openings for the features of the face,a slide adapted to be moved within said head, a covering attached to said head and said slide, and a nose and ears projecting through their respective openings in said head and having retaining flanges or 'bosses and rearward extensions, said rearward extensions adapted to engage recesses or slots within said.-slide', substan tially as described. u
4. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a hollow head having open- IOO ings for the features of the face,a slide adapted to be moved within said head and having eye, tongue and teeth corresponding to their respective openings in the head, a covering attaehed to said head and to said slide, and a nose and ears projecting through their corresponding openings in said head and having retaining bosses or fian ges and a rearward extension, said extension adapted to engage slots in said slide, substantially as described.
5. In a toy of the character described, the combination of a hollow head having openings for the features of the face,a slide adapted to be moved within said head and having eye, tongue and teeth corresponding to their respective openings in the head, a covering at- OTTO C. SANGER.
