TOY CARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,029, dated March 2, 1897.

Be it known that I, NORA M. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hempstead, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Cards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts. This invention relates to toy cards or devices, and to that class thereof which have printed, stamped, or otherwise formed thereon outlines of various objects or structures which are adapted to be cut out and united according to a certain plan, the arrangement of which is indicated by numbers, numerals, letters, or other designating-characters connected with or placed on the various objects or parts thereof.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a plan view of a card 'or sheetof paper which is provided with outlines of various objects, persons, or things, said outlines being stamped, printed, or otherwise formed thereon.

In the practice of my invention I provide a card or sheet of paper A, which may be of any desired shape or size, and which is preferably composed of strong heavy paper, and the persons, objects, and things represented thereon are designed, when out out and united or put together, to represent the old woman and her shoe.

The card or sheetA has printed, stamped, or otherwise formed thereon in any desired manner the separate parts of a shoe, the sole thereof being represented by the figure B, and the upper part of the shoe being represented by the triangular figure O, and in addition thereto afigure D, which, when cutout and properly folded, is intended to represent a stove, another figure E, which is intended to represent a ladder, and also another figure F,which is designed to represent a table,while the figure G is intended to represent a rocking-chair, the figures H and K ordinary chairs, and the central figure L a bed.

The figure O, which represents the upper part of the shoe, is provided withoutwardlydirected extensions 35, which are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits 35, formed in the sole B, and the ends of the part 0 are provided at one side with extensions or projections 36, which are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits 36 in the opposite end, and by this means the separate sides of the upper part of the shoe are united at the heel thereof.

The figure E, which represents a ladder, is providedwith side extensions 5, which, when the figure is cut out and united, are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits 5 at the back of the shoe, and when thus arranged the ladder will be supported at the back or heel of the shoe, and the figure D, which represents a stove, is also provided with extensions 16 at one side, which are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits 16 in the sole of the shoe, near the toe thereof, while the figure F, which represents abed, is also provided with extensions 12, which constitute legs, and which are adapted to be inserted through corresponding slits 12 in the sole of the shoe and at the opposite sides thereof.

The figure G, when out out and properly folded, is designed to represent a rocking chair, as hereinbefore stated, and the rockers thereof are provided with extensions 13, which are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits 13 in the sole of the shoe, and the figures H and K, which are designed to represent ordinary chairs when out out and properly folded, are-also provided with extensions 14 and 15, respectively, which constitute legs which are adapted to be inserted through slits 14 and 15 in the bottom or sole of the shoe, while figure L, which is designed to represent a bed when out out and properly folded, is provided with legs or extensions 10, which are designed to be inserted through corresponding slits which are formed in the sole of the shoe and at ornear the heel thereof.

At the left of the shoe or drawing are two similar figures M and m, which are designed to represent a cup and saucer, the figure M, which is designed to represent the cup, being provided with a bottom extension or projection 33, which is designed to be inserted through a corresponding slit 33 in the bot- ICO tom of the saucer m and through a corresponding slit 33 in the table F after said table has been placed in position in the shoe.

Near the center of the shoe is a figure N, which is intended to represent a coffee-pot, teapot, or similar vessel, and which is provided at the bottom with an extension 20, which is adapted to be inserted through a corresponding slit 20 in the stove D when the latter is placed in position in the shoe, and

adjacent to the sole B of the shoe is a corre sponding figure n, which represents a similar vessel, and which is provided at its bottom with an extension 32, which is adapted to be inserted through a corresponding slit 32 in the stove.

At the right of the drawing is a figure O, which is intended to represent the old woman, and which is provided with an extension 3, which represents one of the feet, and which is adapted to be inserted through a slit 3 in the sole of the shoe adjacent to the bed when the latter is placed in position, and said card or sheet is also provided with twenty-one other figures, which represent boys and girls, and each of which is provided with means whereby it may be connected with the sides of the top of the shoe, or with the ladder, or with the chairs, and some of which are adapted to be placed in or on the bed, and it will be observed that each of these figures is provided with an extension or projection which are respectively numbered, and the shoe, the ladder, the table, the bed, and the chairs are provided with slits which are correspondingly numbered, the location of each particularv figure which represents a child being determined by the number of extensions or projections formed thereon, by which it is to be secured in place.

The figure O, which represents the old woman, holds in one hand a whip P, and when the parts are properly united, according to the foregoing directions, the stove will be set up in the toe of the shoe and the pipe passed through a slit 37, formed in the back portion of the top thereof. Two of the children will be in bed and the old woman will be standing by in the attitude of whipping them, and

one will be standing on one of the chairs in a dangerous position by the stove and one of the children will also be on the other chair, with the table before her and the cup and saucer thereon, and the ladder will be situated at the back of the shoe and two of the children will be mounted thereon.

This device, when the various parts thereof are properly cut out and united, constitutes an interesting toy for children, and the operation of cutting out and uniting the parts, as hereinbefore described, will also be interesting and entertaining, and my invention is not limited to the number of parts or figures employed, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture and amusement a toy having a card, separate parts of a shoe formed thereon, a stove also formed thereon and being adapted to be cut out and folded, a ladder formed on said card, side extensions on said ladder, a figure thereon representing a bed, legs also formed on said card and being adapted to engage said shoe, extensions on said stove adapted to pass through slit-s in said shoe, a figure on said card representing a chair and being adapted when out out to engage said shoe, chairs also formed and provided with extensions, cups and saucers formed on said card and being adapted to engage said table, other figures representing an old woman and children, all being provided with means for respectively engaging the one with another substantially as dc scribed and set forth.
