WILLIAM JAMES KERR, OF SMETI-IPOR'I, PENNSYLVANIA.
MAGNET TOY.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. KERR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smethport, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magnet Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to toys and has for its object to provide a toy of simple and durable construction capable of furnishing amusement.
In the drawings, the figure shows one form which my invention may take, comprising a magnet from which movable metallic figures are suspended.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a magnet, preferably of the horseshoe type, having its lower ends 2-2 in the same plane and in close proximity to each other. The keeper 3, made of magnetic metal, is adapted to be placed over the lower ends 22 of the magnet, or suspended by any one of its pointed extremities l. This keeper is preferably made of sheet metal and is cut in the form of a human being with arms and legs extended. One of the essential. features of this keeper is the pointed extremities or arms l4 fitted to contact with the poles of the magnet 1 thereby providing a one-point suspension from which the keeper may be freely swung or rotated.
As above stated, the keeper is preferably made of flat metal in order that it may be suspended from either one of the poles of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1909.

the permanent magnet 1, and has extensions that may be readily rotated or swung by a horizontal force, such as that which would be given by blowing gently 011 one side of the figure.
The pointed character of the arm ends reduces friction between the turning figure and the magnet practically to zero, and a slight torque will impart high velocity to the figure which will not be entirely lost for a considerable length of time, that is, until the resistance of the air has completely deprived it of its motion.
In the form illustrated, a small top comprising the spindle 5, pointed at each end and having rotating vanes 6 extending from the body of the spindle, is shown inserted between the figure and the magnet. The top can be blown upon and thus rotated in one direction and the figure at the same time caused to rotate in the opposite direction.
W hat I claim is A magnetic toy comprising the combination of a magnet, a figure of magnetic metal having a plurality of radiating arms, and a spindle pointed at each end and composed of magnetic metal interposed between the magnet and the figure and provided with radiating vanes, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
