SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,254, dated June 16, 1891.

Be it known that I, MAX COHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. My invention has for its object to furnish a source of amusement, as well as to provide a device in which each of certain members thereof have a separate use; and the said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a device constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a plan View of a portion of the same; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3 of the preceding figure; Fig. 4, a similar View on line a 4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a sectional view of aportion of another form of my device on line 5 5 of the succeeding figure; and Fig. 6 a plan view of the same.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a base, preferably provided with a hollow stem B, tapered to a point, as shown in Fig. 1, and supported on the base to inclose the stem is atubular standard 0, cutout at its upper end to leave ears b, provided with bearings for trunnions cl, midway between the closed or apertured ends of a tube D, the latter containing a marble or ball E, by which it is normally overbalanced, the cut-out sides of the standard permitting the trunnioned tube to swing in opposite directions.

The trunnioned tube may be of glass or other suitable material, preferably sheet metal, the latter being cheap and durable. I have shown the tube as made of opaque material, such as sheet metal, and in that form illustrated by Figs. 1to 4, inclusive, the interior of said tube is lighted through apertures e in its end caps J", an opening 9 being made in the center of the tube-body to permit of the operator observingthe ball E, above described.

In that form of the toy shown by Figs. 5 and G the trunnioned tube is provided with a slit h, extending from one end cap f to the other, and this slit serves the purpose of the apertures e and opening g, described in connection with the preceding figures. The lat ter figures of the drawings also show the tube D provided with a central partition F and a ball E on each side of the same.

In practice the tube D is tilted on its trunnions to bring the ball or balls in such position as to balance said tube and maintain the latter in a horizontal position on the stand-' ard C, a result that requires patience and dexterity to accomplish, while at the same time the operator and observers are entertained by the efforts necessary to the successful termination of the undertaking.

In addition to the use of the complete device as a toy such as I have described, its several parts are intended for separate use, as follows: The base A and stem 13 form a top that may be spun with a cord and holdingstick in the well-known manner, the tube D may be detached from the standard 0 and the latter employed as a candlestick, and said tube, in the form shown by Figs. 1 to at, inclusive, may be employed as a whistle by closing any two of its apertures and blowing in the other, or said tube and ball therein may be utilized as a rattle, the shaking of one causing the other to move around therein in such a manner as to producearatt-ling sound.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A toy comprising a standard having a suitable base, atube trunnioned on the standard, and a movable ball confined within the tube, substantially as set forth.

2. A toy comprising a standard having a suitable base, a tube of opaque material trunnioned on the standard and provided with an observation-opening, and a movable ball confined within the tube, substantially as set forth.

A toy comprising a standard having a suitable base, a tube of opaque material trunnioned on the standard and provided with an observation-opening, caps on the ends of the tube provided with apertures, and a movable ball within said tube, substantially as set forth.
