EDWARD L. MORRIS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.

IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,239, dated June 25, 1872.

To all 'whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. MORRIS, of

` Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Toy; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawing.

This invention relates to a toy constructed of two or more wings or vanes hung loosely upon a common handle, so that taking the toy in ha-nd by the handle and then shaking ita continuous rotary movement will andcan be given to the vanes in opposite directions, producing-provided the vanes are colored in strips or dots, or are made of a polished metal, or both are made of polished metal and colored, or in other ways preparedmost pleasing, amusing, and interesting effects, which are varied according to the speed in which the vanes are made to revolve.

In the accompanying plate of drawingmy improved toy is illustrated-Figure l being an end view of the same; Fig. 2, a partial side and vertical section Fig. 3, a partial side and vertical section of another form of making the toy; and Fig. 4, an end view of the same.

A in the drawing represents my improved toy; B, the handle to the toy, made of any suitable material-as, for instance, woodturned into proper shape to be grasped and held conveniently by the hand; O O, two vanes or wings made of sheet metal, and, in the present instance, both of a similar shape and size, the shape or outline being substantially the sector of a circle, and in cross-section, provided with corrugations D from one radius line or edge, a, to the other, across the width of the sector. At the end E the sector-wings O are both hung loosely to the end F of the handle B, which has a collar, G, separating the one from the other, and a head, H, to hold the outer from detachment.

Taking the toy A in the hand by the handle B and shaking it, a continuous rotary movement can be given to the vanes or wings C in` opposite directions, so that passing by each other, and thus cutting, as it were, the reflections of the two, kthey produce a most pleasing, iuterestin g, and amusing effect. This eect can be enhanced by coloring the vanes in lines, or'otherwise, across their outer faces, or byy making holes through the same, or in other ways, as is obvious.

In lieu of making the vanes of a sectorshape, they maybe made of a continuous circular or polygonal shape, and with openings, .more or less in number, through each one or more or allof the same, it not being intended to limit the invention to any particular form or particular construction or coloring or ornamentation of the vanes.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

A toy constructed of a handle carrying loose- -ly two or more vanes or wings, substantiallyl as and for the purpose described.
