NICHOLAS MULLER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOY BLOCKS FOR CBJECT'fTACHING.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,835, dated October 21, 1873; application filed J nly 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS MULLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blocks for Obj ect-Teaching and Amusement, of which the following is a specication:
This invention relates to apparatus designed to-facilitate the study of geometry, in the formation of geometrical figures, and to familiarize the minds of both the young and old with such gures, and also to afford recreation and amusement; and it consists in two triangularshaped blocks, made of any material and of any size, by the use of which (and no other) various gures are formed by laying them together, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Figures 1 and 2 represent the pieces or blocks, both triangles, but of different shape and superiicial area.
Fig. 1 has two equal sides, co a, which form an acute angle, b. These sides are equal to the two sides c c of Fig. 2, which two sides The hypotennse of these trianglesis marked d. rlhe'relation of these blocks to veach other is such that when they are placed together, as seen in the gures from 3 to 7, and in various other combinations not shown in the drawings, regular geometrical polygons and gures are produced from a simple triangle of the exact form and proportions of Fig. l, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6, to a perfect pentagon, and other and more complicated geometrical and ornamental forms of almost endless variety. Instruction and amusement may thus be combined, and the intellectual faculties exercised in producing the various forms.
The sides of the blocks, Figs. l and 2, may
be of different colors, and may be lplaced so Witnesses T. B. MosHER, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
