Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN WITTMANN, OF MANITOWOC, WISCONSIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 724,226, dated March 31, 1903.
Application led December 16,1902. Serial No. 135,366. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN WITTMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the followingis afull, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in toys, the object being to provide a toy so arranged that by casting it upon a table or floor it may be caused to assume various forms or shapes indicating various objects and also serve for elementary lessons in arithmetic, thus not only providing amusement, but having educational features.
I will describe a toy embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a toy embodying my invention, showing one of the forms that may be assumed. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing another form. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a: of Fig. l, and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show other forms.
The toy comprises a ring 1 of suitable ma-' like, as before stated,- it may be caused to as= sume various shapesfsuch, for instance, as a comet, as indicated in Figs. l and 4, a full moon, as indicated in Fig. 2, a star, as illus- 4o trated by Fig. 5, and a disk or the like, as shown in Fig. 6.
As an educational device the members extending outward may be added to the members extending inward, or one set ofmembers may be subtracted from the other setof members, thus not only providing amusement to a child, but serving somewhat as a kindergarten instrument. Y
In practice I will provide with the toy a chart suitably colored to indicate the various forms to be assumed by the toy.
The toy is especially applicable to kindergarten work, as a child may by means of. the toy form at least fortynine symmetrical shapes, and thus give the child an idea of shape and form.
Having "thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A toy comprising a ring, and a plurality of members mounted to swing thereon independn ently one of another, the said members being of uniform size and adapted to swing into the r1ng.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
