PUZZLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,041, dated April 8, 1890.

Be it known that I, GEORGE MIcKoW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the State ofIllinois, have invented a certain new and usefullmprovement in Puzzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis a plan view of my improved appliance; Fig. 2, a "ertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a plan View of a modified form of the appliance.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

This invention relates to that type of puzzles in which a setof marbles are placed with in a box provided with pockets and the box manipulated in the hands of the operator so that the difierent marbles will be introduced into the respective pockets and occupy the same singly; and the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and convenient form of such appliance possessing the necessary difficulty of achievement.

Referring to the drawings, A representsan open-top box of either a square shape, as represented in Fig. 1, or a circular shape, as represented in Fig. 3. Pockets or chambers B, four in number, are arranged at the corners of the box A when the same is of a square shape, or equidistant apart around the rim of the box when of a circular shape, as represented in Fig. 3. These pockets or chambers are formed by curved vertically-arranged Walls, as shown, in which are formed entranceopenings 12, located on lines radial from the center of the box A and forming a passageway into such pockets or chambers.

O is a central depression in the center of the box-bottom, to receive and aid in holding the proper marble when the same has been manipulated into its proper position, and b are similar depressions within the pockets B, for a like purpose.

D represents a series of five marbles, four of a single color and one of an odd or different color. These marbles are intended to represent cats, the object being to play a game entitled Pussy wants a corner by so manipulating the box as to secure one of evencolored marbles in each of the pockets l3 and the odd-colored marble in the central depression 0.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is

A toy or puzzle adapted to be held in the hand, comprising a box having a continuous wall, a central depression 0, a series of marginal equidistant pockets or chambers 13, having openings 1), located on lines radial from the center of the box A, and depressions 11 within said pockets or chambers, in combination with a set of four marbles of a similar color and one marble of an odd color, essentially as herein described.
