Description

GEORGE W. KINTZ, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAME-BOARDS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,249, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Kin'rz, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Game-Boards for Amusement and Instruction; and I do hereby declare that the follmving is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a top view or plan of my new gameboard. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section of the same taken at the line .r 6v of Fig. l. Fig. 3 represents the reverse side of the board.
In the construction of my .new amusement board I have had in view the importance of furnishing the means of useful instruction as well as diversion for youth, and have employed letters, iignres, and signs upon the rotary table or board, which is used with two or more indica- `tors, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, A denotes the circular board, having an annular chamber, M, turned out between the rim B and table O. The board is supported upon a suitable pedestal, l), having' an arbor, E, which fits into a central perforation through the board, and upon this arbor the board may be revolved by the hand of the players. The removable double-headed indicator E is inserted through a hole in the arbor above the table O. Upon the table C there are thirty-three concavities of Y a size suitable to receive small marble balls, by the'use of which several welllmown games may be played, such as nine-men, morris, solitaire, YThe table C is also furnished with various signs used in arithmetic, music, Snc., as represented in the drawing. The annular chamber or race-way M between the table O and rim B has three'tiers or circles of characters containing letters, figures, and symbols, and these are arranged radially in line with small concave iudentations n ot' suitable capacity to receive a small marble ball, with which various games may be played. The outer circle s within the annular race-way is a track upon which the ball is caused to travel by the rota-tions of the board. The reverse side of the board is provided with the proper squares for the gaines of chess and checkers. The outer circle of letters and gures is designed for use in playing any game, when the object is to compute numbers. The central circle of letters and signs is used in playing any game in which a given word or sentence is to be spelled out, and the inner circle of symbols is designed to be used as a means of constructing a number of rebuses, according to a key to be provided and furnished with the printed rule s which will accompany each one of the game-boards. The pointer F may be used 'as an indicator, with or without the marble ball, which will occupy the race-way M. The rules describing the several games which may be played will give the deinitions of the symbols upon the board. These symbols will be pointed out from time to time in the course ofthe pla-y by the pointer F, and the key or rules will contain the necessary instructions for all the games for which the game-board may be used. y
The rotation of the board by the players will set a marble ball in motion upon track s, and when the motion of the board is stopped by the player the ball will fall into one of the depressions n, and thereby designate the letter or figure to be taken by the player, according to the particular game being played, and the same operation will bring the pointer F, from time to time, in line with the various characters and symbols.
As before stated, the signification of the symbols and signs will all be set out in a key, and, therefore, need not be more particularly eX- plaincd herein.
It will be obvious that any person using the game-board, as described, may readily establish such rules for playing various games with it as the players may desire. l
Having fully described the construction and manner of using my new amuse1nent-board,l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentlhe rotary board A on pedestal D, provided with the annular chamber M, race-way s, depressions n, and table O, used in combination with the indicator F and a ball, and furnished with the letters, figures, and signs for playing games of amusement, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of May, A. D. 1871.
Vitnesses: GEO. W. KINTZ.
H. P. K. Piron, H. WV. ADNEw.
