Description

J. A. MARTIN.
GAME BOARD.
. (No Model.)
No. 878,174. Patented M81 6, 1888.
HUI INN]!!! HH' li'lvemior I W6 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. ALBERT MARTIN, OF CHARLESTOWN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO HENRY G. SHARP AND JAMES N. TEEPLE, OF SAME PLACE.
GAME-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,174, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed May 3, 1887. Serial No. 236,963. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. ALBERT MARTIN, of Oharlestown, Clarke county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Game-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of my gamero board. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
A is the field-board. I prefer to make it circula'r and to place aroundits periphery a raised margin or ledge, 79, to prevent the playing I5 pieces from escaping off the field; but neither the circular figure nor the band is essential. I also prefer to provide supporting-feet for the board A. At the center of the field there is a small post, d, made of elastic rubber. At a distance of about five inches from the center of the post (I a circle, 6, is inscribed, and immediately exterior to said circle and equidistantly arranged there are several holes, f,
I preferably four; butthe number may be greater 2 5 or less. The holes pass through the board A, and are, for convenience, provided with the pockets or drawers G to receive the playingpieces, which pass through saidholes. Each holef is provided on the exterior with a maro gin or ledge, h, projecting upward from thesnrface of the table or field A,to arrest any playing-piece which may be projected or caused to move across the holef. At about six inches exterior to the line e another circle, 2', concen- 5 tric with the circle 6, is inscribed on the field A. This is the line from which all shots are made.
The game is played with circular or disk playing-pieces k, less in diameter than the 40 diameter of the holesf, so that they will pass freely through said holes. It is contemplated to provide each player with, say, seven of such counters differently colored. for each player, and the contemplation of the game is to drive 5 said disks k, by a blow.of the finger, from the line i into the circle a, resting there, and incidentally to drive the adversarys disks from the field within the circle 0 and through one of the holesf, when the disk so pocketed becomes permanently withdrawn from the game; but the particular order and rules forplaying, counting, &c., cannot be given herein, because they may be varied indefinitely without in any way changing the device which is the subject of this patent. U
I am aware that a game-board has heretofore been made with holes near the center of the field and ducts therefrom leading down through the table to pockets at its margin, and that ledges were erected on the table behind said holes; but that gaineboard differed from mine in these particulars: it was intended to be played with balls driven with a cue. The ledges were placed at a considerable dis tance from the holes, and their ends were exe tended so as to inclose the central part of the table, leaving only narrow passageways. It had no central stud and no surface-ring to indicate play inglimils. It therefore was differently constructed and played in a different manner.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The game-board A, provided with the center post, a, the circles e t, concentric with said post, and the pocket-holes 1, provided 7 with the ledges h, exterior to the circle e, substantially as set forth.
2. The game-board A, provided with the circles e t, pocket-holesf, provided with ledges h, and the pockets or drawers G, to receive the playing-pieces when driven into said holes.
3. A game board or device consisting of a circular field-board, A, provid d with a marginal ledge, b, concentric circles e i, inscribed on the field, a central post, 07, and holesf, pro vided with ledges 71, combined with disks k for playing-pieces, as set forth.
