E. KEMBLE.
GAME OR PUZZLE.
No. 480,872. Patented Aug. 16, 189-2.

I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
v EDMUND KEMBLE, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
GAME O R PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 480,872, dated August 16, 1892.
Application filed April 9, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND KEMBLE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games or Puzzles; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide novel means of amusement; and it consists in the improved puzzle or game and in the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figure 1 is aplan of the puzzle or game. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same, taken on line 00; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line y.
In said drawings, aindicates a shallow box of any suitable material.
I) is a turn-table pivotally secured therein, the said turn-table being provided with a peripheral rim 0, open at one point d, and the said opening having a path d leading thereto from the center of the table, the said path being partitioned ofi from the remainder of the surface of said turn-table by fences e e, which preferably are continuations or extensions of the peripheral rim 0. At the four corners of the box, or at other parts of the box outside of the turn-table, are cribs f f, with fences g g partitioning the interior thereof from the main chamber h of the box a. The said fenoesg are centrally open, as at i, and the openings have bridges or elevated ways 3' of even height with the turntable, the said ways extending close to the periphery of said turn-table and adapted to form a continuation of the path or way 01 upon the said turn-table when the latter is turned to bring the opening d into coincidence with the raised way j. The said raised Serial No. 428,437. (No model.)
way is unguarded to allow the marbles or balls to roll into the chamber h.
In operating the device balls n, corresponding in number to the number of the cribs, are placed on the turn-table, and by inclining the device the weight of the balls cause the table to turn on its pivot or center. By careful manipulation the way d is made to coincide with the raised path or way j, and then one of the balls is selected to be rolled into the crib thus open to the table. In like manner the other balls are entered into the remaining cribs. The balls are preferably colored variously to correspond with the colors or markings of the cribs, respectively, and it is found to be quite difficult, requiring considerable care and skill of manipulation, to enter the balls into the cribs without allowing the balls already cribbed to roll out into the main chamber h.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is I 1. lhe combination, with a box at, having cribs with ways or openings thereto, of a turntable having a peripheral rim to retain the balls on the surface thereof, and a path or way d, leading to an opening in said rim, the said path or way d being adapted to coincide with the ways or openings in said crib and said balls, all substantially as set forth.
2. The improved puzzle or game herein described, in which is combined a box a, cribs f, with ways j, leading thereto, a turn-table I), having rim 0 and fences e 6 extending toward the center of said turn table, and balls adapted to roll between said fences and over the ways j to said cribs, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination with cribs f, having fences g g and openings 'i, ways 3', unguarded, as described, and extending to the periphery of the turn-table, and said turn-table having the opening d, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1892.
EDMUND KEMBLE.
