THOMAS I. GLENN, OF I'IILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAME APPARATUS.
Application filed December 2, 1908.
T o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, TiroMAs J. GLENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following` is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved game apparatus, and more particularly to a chance device including a receptacle in which a number of balls or counters are located, suitably marked or colored to distinguish them one from another, and only one of which can escape when the receptacle is inverted.
A further object is to provide an improved closure for one end of the receptacle, having a series of pockets and a single opening, and to so shape the inner face of this end, that movable devices are compelled to occupy the ockets and but one can enter the opening.
A further object is to provide an improved chance device of this kind, which is adapted for use in playing a great number of games, and which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and entertaining in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l, is a perspective view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of my improved receptacle end showing the inner face thereof.
l represents a receptacle, and 2 a disk, secured in one end of the receptacle casing by an inturned flange 3 on the receptacle, and constituting a closure for one end thereof. The receptacle is preferably of cylindrical form, but is in no wise limited to such a shape, and may be made of various materials and ornamented in any approved manner. The other end of the receptacle is closed by a block 4, which latter is secured in the end of the receptacle in any desired manner, and may be made of wood, metal, papier-mch, or any other material. This block l is provided on its inner face with a series of recesses forming pockets 5, and a single opening 6 is provided in the block. The inner face of the block is inclined toward the pockets 5 and the opening 6, so that the balls 7, within the receptacle, when the latter is inverted, are com- Specficaton of Letters Patent.

pelled to move toward the pockets and opening.
In the drawings, I have illustrated thc block as provided with two pockets and an opening, and employ three balls 7, this allows accommodation for two balls in the pockets 5, and one ball only in the opening 6, the pockets 5 and the opening 6 being of the same diameters, and just large enough to receive a single ball, thus absolutely preventing more than a single ball escaping through the opening 6.
I might of course employ any number of balls by providing the proper number of pockets to accommodate them, and in any event, would so mark the balls, as to designate them one from the other. One method is to color one ball red, another white, and another blue. Another method is to number the balls, and I do not confine myself to any particular way of differentiating the balls one from another. The balls may be in the form of ordinary marbles, or may be of any suitable material and design, but preferably of spherical shape.
In operation, when the receptacle is in the position shown in Fig. 2, it is shaken to agitate the balls 7. The operator then inverts the boX, one of the balls entering the opening 6, while the others are accommodated in the pockets 5. I/Vhen he lifts the rece tacle, the ball which was in the opening 6 wi l be outside of the receptacle, and a play may be made in any suitable game in accordance with the particular ball which escapes from the receptacle. rIhe ball can then be returned to the receptacle, the latter again shaken `and inverted and another ball, or the same ball, will be disclosed when the receptacle is raised.
It will thus be observed that my improved device is adapted for use in a great variety of games in which chance is a factor, and I therefore do not limit myself to any particular game, nor to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a closure in said receptacle having a pocket in its inner side and an opening therethrough, and a plurality of movable devices adapted to enter said pocket and opening When'the device is inverted, and; saidI closure being so shaped as to compel the movable devices to move into the pocket and the opening..
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with,r a.receptacleof avclosure for the receptacle having a plurality of pockets in its inner side anda single opening extending through said closure, a series ol movable devices so designated' to dilierentiate them one from another, there being one* more ofl said movable devicesy than there are pockets.
3; Ina device-of the character described, the'combination-With a receptacle, offa` block secured in the open end of thereceptacle and having an opening, pockets located in the inner side of said block, all of substantially the same diameter as the said opening, and the inner face of said block inclined toward said Ypockets and opening, a series of balls located Within the receptacle, there being one more ball than there are pockets, said balls containing individual marking to designate them one from another, and said balls adapted to enter the pockets and the opening when the devicevis inverted. f
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to-this-speciicationin the presencelof two subscribing Witnesses.
