GGGGGGGGGG Y.
Patented Apr. 27, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS N. PATRICK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAM PAIG N TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,302, dated April 27, 1897. Application filed November 6, 1896- Serial No. 611,228. (No model.)
To al?, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. PATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulIm provements in Campaign Toys; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in toys, the prime object of the same being to provide a campaign toy which will afford amusement to both oldand young in determining at different times who is on top in the political arena.
The invention consists of a rubber ball having two circular openings therein at diametrically opposite points, tubes fitting within said openings, a shaft projecting through the bottoms of said tubes, a stop for limiting the outward movements of said shaft, suitable heads of candidates or others connected to the outer ends of said shaft, and caps upon said heads which are adapted to close the openings in said ball. I also provide upon the outer surface of said balLadjacent to the openings therein, annular ledges or ridges, forming a double trackway upon which the ball may be rolled.
The invention also consistsin other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinaftermore fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specilication, Figure l represents a view of the outer surface of my improved toy with one of the heads projecting outwardly therefrom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalsectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the tubes fitting within said ball.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The ball l is preferably constructed of rubber, although it may be made of any suitable material. The same is provided with circular openings 2 3 at diametrically opposite points, in which openings t the tubes et 5, which project inwardly toward the center of the ball l. Said tubes are formed with annular flanges 6 at their outer ends, which are adapted to fit upon the outer surface of the limiting t-he outward movements of said shaft by its engagement with the inner end of one or the other of said tubes. Secured in any suitable manner to the outer ends of the shaft 8 are rubber or wooden' heads 10 ll, representing candidates for office, as Bryan and McKinley, or, if desired, an ornamental head or head in caricature maybe substituted therefor. The heads l0 ll have secured to them caps l2 12,which are adapted to fit within the openings 2 3 in the ball l, according to the position to which the shaft 8 is shifted. On the outer surface of the ball l I arrange two parallel ridges or ledges 13 l3,which form a double traekway upon which the ball may be rolled.
When the device is used as a campaign toy, the heads representing those of McKinley and Bryan may be secured to the outer ends of the shaft 8, and the object of itwill be to determine which candidate is on top at any particular time. This is done by placing the ball upon the door or other flat surface and rolling it upon the trackway 13 13. At one minute the head of McKinley will project out through the opening 2, and at the neXt minute the head of Bryan will project out through the opening 3. Vhen the ball stops rolling, the one whose head is projecting will be the candidate whose chances appear to be the best at that time.
Instead of the representation of McKinley and Bryan l may substitute any fanciful head or head in caricature and use the device for advertising purposes. I propose to ornament the outs ide of the ball with the representation thereon of two American flags, with nineteen stars on each side thereof and seven stars above and between said liags, representing the number of States in the Union. This, however, isa mere detail and may be varied as convenience may dictate.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a toy, the combination with a ball IOO having openings therein at diametrically opposite points, of a slidingly-mounted shaft containing the head of a man at each end thereof, one of which heads is adapted to be projected at a time through one or the other of said openings. j
2. In a toy, the combination with a ball having circular openings therein at diametrically opposite points, of tubes fit1 ing within said openings, a slidingly-mounted shaft connecting said tubes, and the head of a man upon each end of said shaft adapted to t within said tubes and to be projected through the openings in said ball, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a toy, the combination with a ball having circular openings therein at diametrically opposite points, of tubes ttin g within said openings, a slidingly-mounted shaft connecting said tubes, a stop for limiting the outward movements of said shaft, and the head of a man upon each end of said shaft adapted to t within said tubes and to be projected through the openings in said ball, substan tially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a toy, the combination with a ball having circular openings therein at diametrically opposite points, and a pair of parallel annular ridges upon its outer surface forming a trackway upon which said ball may be rolled, of tubes fitting within said openings having annular flanges at their outer ends by means of which they may be secured to said ball adjacent to said openings, a slidinglymounted shaft connecting said tubes, a stop for limiting the outward movements of said shaft, and the head of a man upon each endof said shaft adapted to fit within said tubes and to be projected outwardly from the openings in said ball, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a toy, the combination with a ball having circular openings therein at diametrically opposite points, and a pair of parallel annular ridges upon its outer surface for1ning a trackway upon which said ball'may be rolled, of tubes fitting within said openings having annular flanges at their outer ends by means of which they may be secured to said ball adjacent to said openings, a slidinglymounted shaft connecting said tubes, a stop for limiting the outward movements of said shaft, the head of a man uponeach end of said shaft adapted to lit within said tubes and to be projected outwardly from the openings in said ball, and a cap upon each of said heads adapted to close the opening in said ball in which the head towhich it is connected fits, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS N. PATRICK.
