Description

I C. J. THUBNGBEN.
0UP AND BALL TOY.
(Application filed June 22, 1900.)
(Ho Iodol.)
CHARLES J. THORNGREN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
CU P-AN D-=BALL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,373, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed June 22,1900.
To a whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. THORN- GREN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cup-and-Ball Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish a toy for children which shall be so constructed as to enable the child to catch a ball in a cup or to reverse the cup and catch the ball upon the pointed end of the handle.
ith these objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of the said parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents the cup and ball connected by a string. Fig. 2 representsa vertical section of the cup and ball, the cup being inverted.
Referring by letters to the drawings, A represents the cup, which is turned out of wood, with a suitable handle B, the handle having its free end pointed, as shown at C. The ball D, which is fastened to the cup by a string E, is also turned out of wood and is provided with a recess F, having a lead or any suitable metal band G secured in its edge, the object of which will be hereinafter explained.
It will be readily seen that by tossing or Serial No. 21.170. (No model.)
ejecting the ball from the cup into the air it may be easily caught in the cup as it descends by the force of gravity. In order to make the toy more complicated, however, I provide the ball with a recess having a weighted edge, which will cause the ball to turn in the air and fall with the recess downward, so as to be engaged by the pointed end of the handle.
I deem the foregoing explanation sufficiently plain to be readily understood by all conversant in such matters, the extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a cup having a pointed handle, and of a ball provided with a recess, the said recess having a weight in the edge thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a cup-and-ball toy,
of the cup having a handle terminating in a point, the ball being provided with a recess having a Weight in the edge thereof, and of a string connecting the said cup and ball, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. THORNGREN. Witnesses:
