UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed April 21, 1900. Serial No. 313,000.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KALKBREN- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys, and more particularly to that class representing an animated object with pivoted limbs and having means to operate the said limbs by moving them up and down.
These and other objects of this invention and the details of the same are described in the following specification, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof like reference characters'are used to indicate the same parts in the various figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same... Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 shows a modified construction.
The toy may represent the figure of a man, monkey, or other animated object, and comprises the body 5 having a head 6, as shown in the drawings. At each corner of the body, which represents that of a man, is a ivot 7, which connects the arms 8 and the egs 9 thereto, so that these members are free to move on these centers.
At the rear of the toy, as shown in Fig. 3, is a slide 10, connected, by means of links 11 or other suitable connections, with the limbs 8 and 9, and about the center of this slide 10 it is so cut as to form a socket 12, having lips 13 and 14 above and below same. This socket is made by cutting the necessary slits in the cardboard or sheet metal from which I the toy is made in such a manner that the lips may be turned at right angles to the slide and be formed on the upper and lower sides of the socket 12, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It will thus be readily seen that when it is desired to move the limbs and give the object the appearance of being animated the operator grasps the body of the object from the rear and inserts his index-finger into the socket 12 and moves the same up and down. The lips 13 and 14 will afford a ready means of thus moving the slide 10, and the same is reciprocated, and the links 1 1 cause the limbs to turn on their pivots 7, and the said limbs will be given movements resembling the motions of the limbs of a human being.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a ring instead of a slide connected with the limbs, so that the arms may be animated and moved while the legs are at rest, and with an upward movement of the ring the legs may be moved while the arms are at rest, or vice versa, or one arm and one leg may be operated. The ring may be connected by cords and wires, so that certain limbs only may be operated while the balance remain at rest.
It is obvious that various forms and representations of animal life may be adopted in the construction of this toy, but the essential feature is the provision of a means by which motions can be given the limbs of the object, so that animation may be represented.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a toy the combination with a body made of wood, sheet metal or cardboard, and representing an animal or human being, of limbs pivoting at suitable points thereon and a slide on one side of the body, having suitable connections with the limbs and a socket for the finger of the operator so that he may move the member up and down and turn the limbs on their pivots.
2. In a toy the combination with a body representing an animal and having limbs pivoted thereto, of a slide connected with each of the limbs and having a socket with overhanging lips to receive the finger of the operator so that he can reciprocate same and cause the limbs to swing on their pivots.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE KALKBRENNER.
