Specification of Letters Patent. Z
Patented Apr. 1c, 1918.
Application filed November 2, 1917. Serial No. 199,858. h
a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shadowgraphs, the object of the invention being to provide simple and efficient means whereby various designs may be built up or assembled and supported in a manner to be disposed between a light and a screen so that the outline of the design shall appear as a shadow upon the screen.
A further object is to so construct a shadowgraph that any one of numerous designs may be created and serve to afford entertainment and amusement when the shadows of such designs are caused to appear on a screen or other surface.
IVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth andpointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a holder for pieces of which a design may be composed. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the manner in which a design may be built up or assembled upon the holder. Fig. 3 is a view of an auxiliary holder. Figs. 1, 5, 6 and 7 are views of sheets containing separable pieces to be cut out and applied to the holder to form various designs, and Fig. 8 is a view of a shadow picture.
1 represents a holder which may consist.
of a plurality of superimposed sheets of cardboard or other suitable material. These sheets are made of various sizes and are secured together in a manner to leave their edge portions free and thus provide spaces into which pieces of cardboard orother material are inserted in building up a design, as illustrated in'Fig. 2. The holder 1 may have a shape to provide a head portion 2, a neck portion 3, and a body or bust portion at. The head portion 2 is made with a recess 5 in line with which the perforated portion of one of the pieces which go to make up the design, may be disposed to represent an eye for example, as shown in Fig.2.
The pieces 6 of which the design may be composed are made in numerous dilferent shapes and these shapes are outlined on sheets of cardboard or other suitable material so that they may be readily cut out and applied to the holder 1 in building up any particular design which fancy may dictate. In Figs. 4:, 5, 6 and 7 I have illustrated several sheets showing various shapes for the pieces 6, but it is evident that other shapes 7 or additional shapes of pieces 6 may be proof sheets secured together leaving their edge portions free to receive pieces 6 and said auxiliary holder may be applied to the holder 1 in the same manner as are the pieces 6.
I/Vhen the design either of a head, an animal or other object shall have been built upon the holder 1 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2, and the same is held between a light and a screen or other surface, a shadow of the such design will appear upon the screen or surface as illustrated in Fig. 8.
Numerous changes may be made in the form and arrangement of the parts composing my shadowgraph and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
For convenience I have applied numbers to the various pieces 6 on the several sheets from which the design shown in Fig. 2 have been selected, the pieces 6 being numbered according to like pieces on said sheets.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: V
holder, an auxiliary holder, and a plurality In testimony whereof I have signed this of variously shaped pieces, both of said specificatlon in the presence of two subscribholders constructed to receive and tempo-' ing Witnesses.
rarily retain said pieces in position to form EUGENE MILES BARLER. a design, and said main holder adapted to Witnesses:
temporarily support the auxiliary holder- K. O. BARKLEY,
and the pieces carried thereby. VVHARTON WEEMS.
fiopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
