Description
(No Model.) L BIEHL.
TOY BALLOON. No. 344,515. Patented June 29, 1886.
A TTORIVEYS UNiTno STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORENZ BIEHL, OF NE? YORK, N. Y.
TOY BALLOON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,515, dated June 29, 1886.
Application filed May 1, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LORENZ BIEHL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Balloons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the gas-filled toy balloons used by children, the improvements being designed with a view to improve the appearance of the balloons without increasing their cost to any great extent; and the invention consists of the combination, with a gas-filled toy balloon, of an openbottomed basket of netting, and cards for suspending the basket from the balloon, said basket being extended above the points of connection with the cords of the netting.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved toy balloon. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a toy balloon, which is preferably made of expansible materialsuch as soft rubberand filled with gas to impart buoyancy thereto. From the balloon A is suspended, by netting B and cords C, an open-bottomed basket, D, which is made of paper or other light material. The cords or stays O are attached to perforations of the basket D. The body of the basket D is extended above the points of connection of the stays or cords G with the same, so that the upper part can be arranged with figures D, representing children or other persons or objects, the basket and figures being preferably painted in colors and cut out by a suitable die,.and then bent and fastened together at the overlapping edges, so as to form the basket, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Serial No. 200,766.
(No model.)
Any suitable configurations may thus be represented in connect-ion with the basket in a cheap manner, by which the appearance of the balloon is improved and the amusement of children increased. A cord, E, is attached to the bottom of the balloon and passed down ward through the open-bottomed basket 1), for conveniently holding and carrying the balloon. The bottomless basket has the ad vantage that it exerts but little resistance on the air, so not to decrease the buoyancy of the balloon to any extent, and that it does not interfere with the holdingcord E. By suspending a basket from the expanded toy balloon it resembles more clearly a real balloon, and furnishes greater amusement to children, especially when comical figures are arranged in connection with the basket.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to seen re by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of a gas-filled toy balloon, netting extending over the same, and an open-bottomed basket suspended from stays or cords of the netting, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a gas-filled toy balloon, netting extending over the same, stays or cords extending downward from the netting, an open-bottomed basket attached to the cords, and a cord attached to the bottom of the balloon and passing downward through the bottom opening of the basket, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
LORENZ BIEHL.
