SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,098, dated December 14, 1886.
Application tiled March 25, 1886. Serial No. 196,5'19. (No model.) n
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. CoLBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefula Improvements in Kites, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to kites such as are used by children for their amusement, and has for its object to provide a kite with a windbag rearwardly projecting, whereby it is steadied in the air and prevented from darting. The means whereby I accomplish this object are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front view ofthe kite, and Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view thereof.
Like parts are indicated by the same letter in both figures. Y
A is the kite; B B, the outside wire or cord; C C, the ribs; D D, the inner wire or hoop for supporting the bag; E E, the intermediate strengthening-hoop; F, the bag; GG, ornamental streaniers; H H, the paper or covering of the kite; H H', its turned-up edges, F F', straps whereby the bag may be secured.
The construction of my invention is as follows: The ribs may be of any desired material, but I prefer wire. The outer cord or wire may loe of any desired material. The inner bag-supporting hoop and the intermediate strengthening-hoop can be of wire, if desired. The kite can be covered with cloth or paper. The bag can be of any desired shape and size and secured at any convenient point, and made of cloth or paper. The bag may be secured by straps pasted to the kite proper. The paper is secured to the frame in the usual manner. Streamers can be used, or other ornament. Sonie of the enumerated parts could obviously be dispensed with.
The wind-bag could be made of any desired shape, size, or material, and it could be placed at any position on the kite, and more than one could be used, if desired.
I am aware of and do not claim the form of construction shown in Patent No. 121,056 to Maddans.
I claiinand desire to secure- 1. A kite having a frame, a covering, a central hoop, and a wind-bag secured thereto, the wind-bag being secured to the frame.
2. A kite having a frame, acovering, a central hoop, a wind-bag secured thereto, and an intermediate strengthening-hoop, both hoops being secured to the frame.
3. A kite having a central hoop, a windbag secured thereto, and a wire frame consisting of an outer cord and ribs extending from hoop to cord.
4. A kite having a central hoop, a vrindbag secured thereto, a wire frame consisting of an outer cord and ribs extending from hoop to cord, and ornamental streamers secured to the back.
