APPLICATION FILED JULY 5, 19l2.

V DARIUS T. PHILLIPS, on CHICAGO, ILLrnois.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 1915,
Application filed July 5, 1912. Serial No. 707,765.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Burns T. PHILLIPS. a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to toys and has for its primary object the production of an improved form of toy of simple and attractive design adapted to display reproduction of birds, animals, and other objects in an attractive manner, giving them the semblance of being animated or living objects.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved, simple, cheap and eificient vehicle for carrying various toys in the form of animals, birds, and the like.
Other objects will appear from the description in the specification and from'an inspection of the drawing, which forms part of the specification and depicts the form of the invention preferred by me.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the toy, with a toy bird attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional'view taken at right angles to the view of Fig. 2 through approximately the middle of'the device, illustrating the construction-and the means for supporting the interchangeable imitation of birds, animals, and the like adapted to be carried on the device.
I prefer to construct the vehicle or carrying portion of the toy of the general shape illustrated in'the drawings, and in this embodiment shown the vehicle portion is shown turned from wood, although itwill be apparent that metal or other suitable material may be employed, and when metal is used, instead of constructing the vehicle portion of solid material as illustrated in the drawings, parts of the material may be cut away, retaining only the general outline of the design shown.
The vehicle portion is indicated generally by the reference character A and is shown as turned from wood. 7 It is in the general. form of two cones with their bases joined together byrthe integral ,neck portion indicated by the reference character 10. The apices of the cones thus joined together are preferably formed blunt and somewhat enlarged, as indicated at 11 and 12, thus affording slight grooves for the attachment of loops of some flexible cord as indicated at 13, 14!. The portions of the cord 13, 14: are preferably the ends of a continuous strand,
which theoperator of the toy may grasp to pull the vehicle part A over the floor or other surface. Near the bases of the conical portions there are cylindrical enlargements on either side of the peripheral groove leading to the connecting neck portion 10 and these cylindrical portions are designated in the drawing by the reference characters 15,
v16. They furnish suitable peripheral portions upon which the toy may be rolled over the floor or other surface. The contracted. neck portionlO is provided with a groove, as indicated at '17 This groove supports, a couuterweighted metallic member 18, upon which is adapted to be mounted various toys in the form of animals, birds, and the like. In the embodiment of the invention shown-in the drawing a removable toy in the form of a bird is illustrated, as.
indicated by the reference character 19, the same being detachably mounted on the'upper extremity of the metallic support 18 by means of a tubular depending portion 20,
which telescopes overthe upper end of the member 18. The toy supporting'metallic piece 18 is preferably formed of suitable spring wire and is given the general shape shown most clearly in Fig. 3, from which it or convolution between its extremities, as
indicated at 18. which loop or convolution .will be seen that it-is provided with a loop surround more than a semi-circumference of the groove 17 'on the neck portion 10. The
vmember .18 is counterweighted, the same be ;ing indicated by the reference character 21. This counterweight 21 may be of any suit .able material, preferably such as lead or any metallic or other suitable substance being relatively heavy. It is preferred it be given the general shape illustrated in the drawings and a convenient. method of attaching the same to the spring member 18 is that illustrated,- from which it will be seen that asuitable groove 21 is provided and through this groove the lower'extremity of the metallicmember 18 is passed, the
same being provided with an eye through which may be passed a pin as indicatedat 22 to secure the parts together. The loop 18- of the spring member 18 is, given such formation that it is necessary to spring the extremities of the loop somewhat apart in will Inaintfain the ty in; the vertical position upon the upper side ef the vehicle in the manner illustrated in the drawings, even though the toy may be rolled along the floor "or other surface upon the peripheral or wheel portion 15, 16.
Itis an important feature of the invention that the conicalprojection-s on the vehicle portion afford a convenient surface for various designs of colering which makes it more attractive as is; operated colorlng may be given any'des red form, one
form preferred by Hi9; being that illustrated in the drawings, consisting ofvariegated V stripes in 'pi ral' formation, particular 7 o ieli this eoloring'or str ping'shall take, however, is a matter that niay be left operator siinp y gras I j is preferably a single or united strand,
to: the taste efthe manufacturers and users. In operat n; the, toy, the child or other ps the Str1ng13, 14:,
' and pnlls the device over the'sur' fa'ce upon the wheel portions 15, 16, causing thevehicle part .to' revolve while atf'the same time the neek portion 10 will rotate inside "theloop I8 ofthe' countereighted toysupporting menrbe r -18 the friction will not be'sufiicien t to cause any appreciable motion on the part or the toy 19 when the parts are properly constructed as described," In this operation the toy will appear-to be mounted upen the top of the peripheral part 15, 16 of the vehicle, and when the feet" of the toy are relatively close to the periphery of the vehlcle the representation of the animal or will appear to be walkin upon the upper periphery. ra er; 11? be seen a toy full'oflife and movement is provi ed, and it man important ieature of the inventron that the toy pertion19 is madedetacht at able simply by'lifting the tubular part 20 fl s i c counterwelghted supporting part 18 The veh cle part, therefore, it' 'will ge seen is frjo1n7the upperextremity of the -adapted"to carry any suitable character of toy," and it is preferred that with eech of devices a number of "different toys be provided, as for egani ple representations of birds of various colors, and all sorts of -animals snch as monkeys pigs, and the like.
'bodiment have been s [in order that the invention might be fully understood the' details of the preferred emecifically described,
but it is not-desired'to e limited to the exact details of construction, for it will be apparent that persons skilled in the art may resort to many modifications and adaptations without departing from the purpose and Spirit of the invention.
two substantially conical shaped members provided near their bases with peripheral portions upon which the said members are adapted to'roll, the said conical shaped members being connected by a suitable neck portion with their bases adjacent each other and a space therebetween, and a counterweighted toy supporting )ortion pivotally mounted on' the neck and extending above h u er P iph r 'Qftlw a a n eeni a bases s po in a tail the eon- 3.
